2017-11-07 00:17:00 | OK - here goes . I have three scads of MP3s, WMAs and various videos on a (at the moment) disconnected external USB-HDD . Are they SAFE TO PLAY on my new Ubunto distro? I'm running Ubuntu 16 . 04 .

2017-11-07 00:32:00 | Safe? They will play if you allowed the installation of third party codecs when you installed the OS. They will not if you didn't, obviously. Either way they are unlikely to cause an explosion :D

2017-11-07 00:41:00 | Ka Boom! (just kidding) I want to know if I can actually play MP3s and WMPs and MPAs (is that right?) on L-based systems OK or not . I do NOT want to re-format the drive - no WAY!

2017-11-07 00:51:00 | Seems 16.04 has caused a problem with a faulty /broken gstreamer causing WMA not to play --- many sites report the only way to fix it is to remove the installed version and throw in a previous. one of many report: askubuntu.com

2017-11-07 01:01:00 | Just use VLC player it has its own codecs. | KarameaDave (15222) | |
2017-11-07 01:09:00 | Ahaaaa! VLC it is then! I've used that before - not a glitzy as WMP - but it'll do . Is there a version of DVD Shrink for Linux too? And BTW: How can I find a place to poll the repositories to see what's available? (is that the correct terminology? You KNOW what I'm trying to do - not? I want to have my XP in Linux .

2017-11-07 01:55:00 | You may have a program called synaptic package manager that you can browse available programs in the repository. To play mp3/wma, you may need to install ubuntu-restricted-extras and possibly gstreamer1.0-plugins-{good,bad,ugly}
