1441527 2017-11-04 04:46:00 I recently upgraded my Windows 10 PC to a 128Gb SSD. I followed some instructions I found online to clone my C: drive and move it to the SSD (F:). I changed the boot order in my BIOS to ensure the SSD booted first & everything worked fine. I got a nice fast boot up. :-)

I hit a snag when I tried to format C: drive. I received the following message: "You cannot format this volume..." It says Windows will stop working.

How can I persuade Windows that it is in fact booting from F: drive?

That, and Windows 10 will always report the drive it's booting from as drive C:, even if it's not the first one.

Try it with just the SSD and see if it boots ok, if it does there are various ways to clean out your old one - connect it once windows is already running and use disk manager, boot off a linux disk or partitioning tool and do it from there, boot off a windows install disk and delete the partitions, etc.

EaseUS has a good tool that'll do it, you may have to make a bootable disk though to get around windows limitations https://www.partition-tool.com/
