1441516 2017-11-03 20:02:00 I have an external drive made up of a case and an old drive from my desktop. It was playing up so I did a full format. I have also carried out a chkdsk which identifies that there are no bad blocks.
However, every time I start to do a backup onto this drive (USB 2), the Recovery drive becomes highlighted, after a short while. Carrying out the backup stops.

Wonder if Recovery thinks that the drive should contain an operating system, as there was one on it - a long time ago? I am clutching at straws here and am very open to suggestions as to how I can fix.

1441517 2017-11-03 21:21:00 Formatting a drive doesn't remove all partitions ( if it had a couple) Have a look in the disk management to see if there are other partitions or download and install a partition manager, something like this www.disk-partition.com you can wipe all partitions and recreate a single partition.

You can also run crystal Disk Info (portable) portableapps.com that will tell you the state of the drive. chkdsk doesn't always give an accurate result.

1441518 2017-11-04 04:32:00 Hi wainuitech - as always I do value your suggestions and fixes. Re AOMEI Partition Assistant, I started to download it and got this message from Ublock ......"has prevented the webpage from downloading" because of "the following filter" download.cnet.com^$document. So I went to "Temporarily" Disable, then got a further blocking message! It seems to me that Ublock are getting carried away and hyper-security fixated?? I have had a look though on Disk Management and there are four partitions on this 1 Gig drive?!! So I need to consolidate. When you mentioned partitions I did think back, yes there are two as I recall ........but four !!! Misty (368)
1441519 2017-11-04 05:26:00 Always get software from the manufactures - Here's the page -- scroll down and select the Free version www.disk-partition.com

OR a direct download link ( same place) www.aomeisoftware.com

To clean out the old drive, with the software installed, open the software, right click on the drives partitions you want to clean ( GET THE CORRECT DRIVE) Delete partition - do all the partitions on the drive till all gone - apply. Then once finished, right click the blank HDD, Create partition - it will automatically format it as well.

Make sure you get the correct drive (cant say it enough) as its a real Awhh F**** when you wipe the wrong drive esp when booting from the CD you can create -- Been there done that.:crying
