1441339 2017-10-30 04:32:00 I do two sets of backups of my desktop data. Both are on external hard drives and both kept at home. Now, I know that the ideal is to keep one off site in case of fire, but not always easy to do that on a regular basis. I do know one friend of mine keeps a set in his car. One of my external drives is at the front of our house and one in the rear, the bedroom. On and off recently I have been thinking of buying a small safe. You can buy one for somewhere between $100-$200 at Mitre 10, so viable for me. However I wonder sometimes would the heat if there was a house fire permeate through the walls of the safe and melt - the enclosure at least? (though that could be replaced). If the fire were intense enough I would imagine that the safe would fall through the floor to the ground underneath, so that should be okay?

My backups mostly are made up of 370 Gigs of photographic images (my amateur passion is photography, taken up two years before retirement). I could have a backup in the cloud, but with that amount of data, would have to pay. I don't know that I have enough faith in the cloud for my final port of call !!

What thoughts/suggestions have you please?

1441340 2017-10-30 07:09:00 I hear you Misty. I don't have that much vital data but what I do is I have a small non-fireproof safe under the house housing a small USB3 drive holding backups up to a month old. My computer is on the ground floor on the south side of the house and my NAS, with regular backups, is upstairs on the north side. I am close to a fire station so I hope only one half of the house will be burnt at a time!

I also have vital stuff like family photos in the cloud so feel I am pretty well covered.

As for how much protection you would get with a small non-fireproof safe............. Would just be luck of the draw. I did think of fire proofing a safe with rock wool, and maybe recessing it under the ground in the stand- up space under the house but never got a round tuit!!

1441341 2017-10-30 08:12:00 I do photog so ~500GB still less than others though, we have a safe deposit box in the city so we do a 3 or 6 monthly update. Online storage isn't bad either. $50US a year for unlimited, some can also send them the hard drive and the will copy it for you if you have lots of files. Also NZ ones but likely more expensive. 1441342 2017-10-30 18:30:00 For the cloud, it's only replacing your offsite backup, ie the one you're contemplating a safe for. You keep your local (local x2), and just add the cloud and a 3rd layer.

Backblaze personal I think is the best now that Crashplan has stopped doing home plans.

1441343 2017-10-30 19:16:00 In case of fire?
Can't you keep one out in the garage or such?

Cause in case of burglary, they'll pinch the safe too.

1441344 2017-10-30 20:00:00 Image how long it will take to upload 350Gb into the cloud :-)

Just put it all on a small portable USB hard Drive. Ask a friend to look after it, and offer to do the same for their offsite backup.

in the car : can easily get stolen etc
small safe : wont protect data if there's a fire .
