1443132 2017-12-20 09:01:00 as above silver solder can be very handy. need very little of it.
with brazing don't forget silicon bronze. some types you do not need to use flux. can also tig braze with it.

i've just set up the mig with flux core wire. having fun getting the settings right and i think i just stuffed a tip.

stick, 3.2 rods will be easier. i have 2.4's at the mo and at full length often require one hand on the rod it self to stop the shake. thin rods whip a fair bit.

1443133 2017-12-20 09:08:00 , but I feel time to learn to weld - male thing or age thing? Dunno. Mig seems to be dearer than arch. Neighbor offered me a tiny arch welder (looked like a battery charger really) few years back, but had no interest then..

just a guy thing.
i'm just annoyed they didn't teach us at school so many years ago.

just be a little careful with cheap inverter welders. i suspect most will not run 6010 rods.
generally buzz boxes will run 6011's ok.
make sure you get one that has a display or dial so you can set it. and has plug in leads.

Stop drinking lolz.
You will go through a few tips and the wire will stick. Buy .08mm tips packet of 5 from BOC.

Thought the DTs would give you a better weave.

1443137 2017-12-21 16:05:00 I don't know if youse guys have spray cooking oils in Upsidedown Land or not, but I get a can of PAM in peanut oil . . . . and use that as my tip lube and anti-spatter coating .

That keeps the spatter from sticking to the areas outside of the weld, and lubes the tip and nozzle to keep them clean and easily cleanable with a minimum of work .

Plus it smells good!

1443138 2017-12-21 22:49:00 we have spray cooking oils, typically canola. i use it for keeping drive chains clean and lubed (slow speed).
i just got in from the store with some anti-splatter gel. cheap enough to try it out.
looking forward to getting the tig going.

Even with anti splatter, gasless mig welds still looks like **** even though its still strong.

thats for sure. thought i would switch over to gas mig for a bit today. even with it not dialed in very well the welds are nice and clean.

1443141 2017-12-22 16:39:00 your problem will be the $350 tops for a new one, let alone a good oneDidn't bother looking at this thread cos I've never had any interest in welding... it kinda scares the crap outta me, although I loved oxy-acelylene cutting when I briefly worked as a pipe fitter many years ago in Sasol 2.

As for price, I did a quick search for what the heck mig welding is and came across this one (www.bunnings.co.nz) in Kahawai's budget.
