I experimented with in-ear buds (the ones with the different sized soft tips). Sennheiser was good but expensive. I found Philips to be surprisingly good for $25 and more consistent across different purchases than Sony

I’ve been using a pair of razor Tibet ones. But have just bought some SteelSeries arctic 7s which are wireless. It’s primarily for music. With the advantage of being able to Skype.

Both are over the ear style worn for long periods. Before that I used to use song mdrv500 dj headphones. Good sound, good price. Only replaced them as I wanted a microphone.

1442317 2017-11-22 23:04:00 Do you have a listening post there https://www.listeningpost.co.nz/ they would have all the headphones out to listen to.
Also I think JB HIfi tend to have a good setup.

When Listening Post charges over $4000 (yes - that's four thousand dollars !) for a HDMI cable (www.listeningpost.co.nz), you know that they are ratbags !!

1442319 2017-11-23 20:43:00 Thanks people. In the end I got the Audio Technica ATH-M40X. Same day delivery from MightyApe (first time using them).

Really, why?
Far better to go online and via Pricespy or Priceme search out who has the ones you like, at the best price.
Sit back and await the courier.

I ended up buying some online but you can't try them online and I'm not gonna shell out $200 without hearing any first.

Audio Technica ATH-M50's have always been pretty good value for $. My only complaint is the vinyl ear muff parts get uncomfortable if wearing for more than an hour or so. You can buy velvet type ones off ebay/amazon that fixes that issue. I use those at home and Bose QC35's when out and about, because noise cancelling is life.

Ha, wait you want on ear, nope, don't know of anything.

Initially I was concerned about the over ear but I haven't minded the extra heat so far (room stays around 19-21 degrees) and over the couple of days of use I have found them pretty comfortable after a few hours use at a time. It also helps a bit with eternal noise which is appreciated. Sound is awesome for the money, much better than I expected I would get at this price point. The overall sound is flatter than other ones I tried but it sounds more true. A lot seemed to saturate the bass and it almost became painful to listen to with some of my heavier music. I did look at the M50X but there was none I could try locally and reviews suggested that the extra $$ didn't translate into a better value product so I was happy to take the gamble that this was the best value for money option.

1442320 2017-11-24 05:27:00 I know you can usually get a better $$ deal online, but that's because they're not paying rent or wages for the places that you can try them out at and the people that can give good advice - you can usually extract a discount by showing the online price if local is really exhorbitant, but I for one don't mind paying a little extra for the physical presence - if you don't support your local shops, they will go away and then, no more 'try before you buy'. fred_fish (15241)
