1441953 2017-11-15 04:31:00 When my desktop started to go very slow I thought it was the new version of Firefox that I had just downloaded. However got the same when using Windows Explorer, etc. So then suspected the desktop itself. I have the operating system and programs on an SSD, which is only 50% full. The G Drive for the data is only 50% full. I have gone to Task Manager and the memory use tends to be about 52%. I have rebooted , but makes no difference.

My operating system is Windows 10, fully up to date. Have not downloaded anything new recently, except for some freebies from Serif Affinity Photo for users of their Version 1.6.

What should I check next please? Even whilst typing this my fingers are very far ahead on what is appearing!!

Note to self: Must do a virus check using Avast - maybe that will show something ??

1441955 2017-11-15 05:58:00 My PC has just updated WIN10. Probably yours has been doing the same. Bryan (147)
1441956 2017-11-15 20:18:00 Thanks Dave & Bryan. I took note of what you suggest and instead of switching off my desktop last night I left it running. This morning rebooted, but the problem is still there! :-( Misty (368)
1441957 2017-11-16 00:33:00 Disconnect from internet , turn off modem router
Restart PC . Is it still slow , open word ,see how fast it opens. Type something in & see if typing still lags

If disconnecting internet fixes it, it could be updates causing the issues (or malware)

Can also be AntiVirus gone rouge , malware, Hard drive failing .

Avast is now so bloated with crapware(yes) it honestly could be that as well. Uninstall it & see if it helps . I would uninstall it anyway, its pretty bad now.
Run msconfig & start disabling Non MS services & startup items , restart & see if that helps
Download Malwarebytes & run a scan (Avast MUST be disabled while doing a malware scan)

Go into task manager, performance & see whats using all the CPU or whats over-accessing the HD

You can also try rolling back Windows10 to a previous build ver or system restore to restore to a week or so back.

1441958 2017-11-16 03:56:00 I hate those rouge Antiviruses, too much pink powder for my tastes  KarameaDave (15222)
1441959 2017-11-16 07:52:00 Have disconnected internet, and Word works fine. Firefox, which I have used for at least 16+ yrs, seems to be the culprit. Whenever I go to Task Manager the usage is between 73% -90% Gigs, mostly by far Firefox :( Misty (368)

Well, 1101 Working my way through your great suggestions. In Task Manager, I see that with no demands put on Firefox it is using 117 Mgs, whereas in the same way Edge is only using 25 Mgs. I have started using Edge now mostly even though my only browser in the last 15-20 years has been Firefox. Have also tried Chrome, but I see reading comparisons that in most situations Edge is that bit faster.

I will probably uninstal Firefox, then re-instal to see if that helps.
