668410 2008-05-12 19:01:00 Years ago before "standby" was invented there were lots of tv fires.

Now there are very few.

Also I used to sell PC's in the '80's and found they were FAR more reliable if left on 24/7.
There is stress on motherboards heating up and colling down and solder joints tend to crack. Also some components used to gradually work their way loose due to this contracting and expanding.

668411 2008-05-12 20:49:00 That is all a six of one and a half dozen of the other thing but if everyone turned off there would be a vast power savings throughout the country.

I have heard something similar. I understand that if everyone switched off their appliances that were on standby (such as your TV) the power companies might be able to switch off a small power station. And that may be critical at present when they are saying that our lakes are low for this time of the year.

668414 2008-05-12 23:21:00 Good idea, turn them all off, and conjointly save a fortune nationally in electricity generation costs -
Then enjoy a short period with your savings before the price of electricity gets adjusted upwards so that the power companies can recover the revenue lost by everyone saving on stand-by power

It's really satisfying to see that misanthropy, sardonicism and good old fashioned cynicism is still alive and well in this great country of ours!

Well done, Ken.;)
