802851 2009-08-20 23:59:00 Thanks for all the help. After unplugging and then replugging in (one at a time) issue was a front panel USB plug, that was causing the system to reset. Once this was unplugged, everything booted like it should.

Running XP, and bringing this back up, was easier than I expected. Considering the large number of changes - from MB (and chipset) on through - I had expected to see a blue screen at some point. But, no. Just loaded new driver, re-activate, and away. Only component that was not replaced was the HD.

802852 2009-08-21 00:06:00 Good stuff.

Were the front USB ports attached to the motherboard incorrectly or is there actually something wrong with them?

802853 2009-08-21 00:08:00 USB might be shorted or wired incorrectly

Re-check the connectors

802854 2009-08-21 01:14:00 Incorrect wiring of the USb ports will stop the board from booting - One thing to check on - look inside the Front USB ports, there should be a plastic tab, if this is broken and the pins are bent they will be shorting - making the port useless.

If they are OK then check the arrangement / order - they should run Red/White/Green/Black

Pin arrangement below left to right(hopefully) red/white/Green/ Black

Just looked- cant see what the original case is - IF its an HP they have a habit of wiring non standard for the USB - a real pain in the Butt.

802855 2009-08-21 02:42:00 Funny enough, a Colorsit case I bought for my lounge PC had incorrectly wired USB ports

They probably got soldered on wrong at the factory, but with the help of a sewing pin they were easily swapped at the plug end.

Even brand new cases can be wrong!
