670595 2008-05-18 22:44:00 So i got the letter today

You have been summoned to attend as a juror @ XXX in JUNE

Problem is I have a 3rd year paper university exam ON THAT DAY.
My final exam in university EVER!!

Is this a grounds for excuse from jury service?
Or will I be stuck & have to sit my exam earlier :(

Yes it should be grounds for it, you will/may need a letter from your lecturer or university to provide evidence you do actually have an exam though

670597 2008-05-18 23:09:00 I was called up for jury service just 3 months after I turned 18, and said I can't go because I have lectures/tests etc and I was excused.

I didn't have to attach any proof.

So a final should be grounds for being excused even more so than me!!

670600 2008-05-18 23:29:00 In my opinion, it is something that you should be willing to do, but there are other things that are more important at the time.

I have served on a jury once, and found it most interesting and I am certain that you would as well.

But your finals are more important, so tell them, politely, no thanks.

I think that they invite more people than they require knowing that there are some who, cannot/do not want to, attend. Do not worry if you cannot - there are plenty of people left.

And when you do turn up, it is not certain that you will serve. There is a waiting room and you wait. The wheels of justice turn slowly.

You will be told how many trials there are that week and your chances of serving. They call out names and if yours is called you are in for possible selection for a jury. If your name is not called you may go home but may be required to attend the next day.

When finally in court, your name is called and you are not challenged (there is no requirement for the challenger to give any reason for his challenge) you are then a member of the jury.

The process is interesting but long winded and even if you are chosen you may not be required that day - the trial may start the next day. The pay is poor but you may opt not to be paid (the renumeration will be paid to your employer) but continue receiving your normal wages. Parking, petrol and public transport is paid.

670602 2008-05-19 00:24:00 Reply to the Courts and tell them you have your exam. Tell them you want to be on a jury but at a later or earlier date.

They will adjust the date to suit.

I agree with wratterus, that's not the attitude to have on a jury. If you do serve, then it's because the police/crown/authorities that be have accused someone of committing a crime, and they have plead not guilty. Your job is to ensure that the verdict delivered is fair and just (aka: who's lying, based on all evidence presented, witnesses, fingerprints, DNA, expert opinions, it depends on what the accused is accused of doing). The justice system in this country means that if you "wanna send somebody to jail mannnnnn", then you could very well be sending an innocent person to jail.
