804443 2009-08-26 05:36:00 I have a cybercafé, i had 3 computers first with a switch 4 ports, everything was going so fine.

a week ago, i ordered a new switch (D-LINK DES-10160 - 16 Ports - www.abhtech.ma ) with 5 new computers.

I'm using Windows Vista, I can connect to Internet but sometimes (mostly each 6 minutes) my modem (ADSL / ACT light) stops flashing and the (ADSL / LINK light) becomes orange, then i lose the internet connection in all computers.

i called my Internet provider, they said "we don't see any issue here, it may be your local network."

NOTE: when i connect directly to a computer, i mean without using the (switch / network) It works fine.

I gave my friend my switch and modem to test, it works fine with him.

where can be the probleme ?

Thanks

804444 2009-08-26 05:55:00 What router are you using ?? A switch on its own wont route off the IP addresses to various PC's, you require a router to do that ? wainuitech (129)
804445 2009-08-26 06:06:00 I'm using a switch (D-Link), i don't think i need a router... or any other idea there ? mafitsi (15205)
804446 2009-08-26 06:22:00 As said in above post you need a router.

804447 2009-08-26 06:30:00 Only time that works with out a dedicated Router, is if its a Modem/Router all in one - if its a single port Modem then you need a router, if its a 4 port modem/router then thats OK to connect directly to a switch.

What "modem" do you have ?

Edited:
Heres an example a single port Modem will issue 1 IP address, you can only have 1 IP address on a LAN, each PC must be different.

A Switch will take 1 IP address and put it out to each port = No GO.

A router will Issue up 254 Addresses. say your Router has the IP address of 192.168.1.1 - then it will issue out 192.168.1.2 -192.168.1.254 --- alls well.

IF your Modem is a 4 port router as well , then thats fine to conenct directly to a switch.

A router and a switch are completely different.

804451 2009-08-26 06:40:00 Thanks for the Pictures --- - thats a single port Modem - you need a router - you would be better off getting a 4 port modem/router combo, they cause less hassles.
i gave my friend my modem and switch, he didn't see the problem If only 1 PC was connected there wouldn't be a problem - add in more and it will all turn to custard with IP address conflicts.

Edited: The modem/Router will look something like This Asus (www.imagef1.net.nz) - the switch(s) plug into any of the 4 LAN ports.

Note on parts listing LAN1 - LAN4
