670014 2008-05-21 08:33:00 Calling the country Burma is akin to calling The United Kingdom England, Certainly Burma is a large part of Mayanmar, but the Welsh and Scottish dont want to be called English. The real Burmese are from the central plains but there are many people such as the Shan,Karen,Mon or Rakhaing who live in Mayanmar but are not Burmese or Bermese speaking. Interestingly the name change is one of the very few military moves that has a level of support within the country. tutaenui (1724)
670015 2008-05-21 10:02:00 I have watched this thread with interest.

While I found the thread informative, I personally, take the view that we should learn from history so as not to repeat mistakes made in the past.

I happened to be born here five generations ago from United Kingdom stock.

In New Zealand (Aotearoa) we have a system of government and justice based on the Westminster model. It would appear that part of the Bible may correct in so far as the sins of the Father may be visited on the Son.

The Treaty of Waitangi was signed some time back and all Aotearoa taxpayers regardless of race are still paying for settlements which of course comes from taxes.

Quite a number of tribes did not sign and so therefore should not get any benefits in the way of compensation. Take Tahoe for example. Does this mean that particular iwi has a right to break the law as it stands?

There is no doubt in my mind that the Maori people as a whole are entitled to compensation due to the land wars. I think that people made mistakes on both sides.

I would rather all citizens of this country forget the past and look to the future. There is no point in dwelling in the past.

Of course this would depend on whom you believe to report history accurately. I suspect none of us alive were around in 1860.

Much like the global warming thing. So who was here to measure a temperature 40,000 years ago?
