670518 2008-05-19 09:50:00 I didnt say I beleived it. I perfer to walk if I dont actually need the car. Cant beat that gas saving. rob_on_guitar (4196)
670519 2008-05-19 22:33:00 ...........I think in a vehicle with EFI, it shouldn't make a difference (or not a very big one) whether you are in neutral or idling in the right gear to hold speed you need to, not unless you are using the accelerator. i don't know with petrols these days but certainly new diesels it makes a big difference. eg with mine if you over ~1500 rpm, no throttle and especially if foot is on the brake the motor cuts all fuel. so your effectively coasting down hill with motor off.
so it makes its much better to have your foot right off the throttle going down hill especially if you just have the brakes on a fraction (just to get brake lights on).

.......... I see more people do this now, so theres huge gaps in between everyone. Unfortunately it doesn't do much for getting home earlier :sleep
doesn't matter how close you are to the vehicle in front, your not going to get there any quicker. in fact to close and you will go slower as the driver in front compensates for the idiot up their arse ! something these dumb truckies need to learn. trying to push along vehicles doesn't work and doing a run up behind a vehicle doesn't achieve anything. get to close, they simply slow down and you will have to crawl up that hill.

Well, good trick I have learnt for the tailgaters is to speed up a little (as far as legally possible - they will follow), then tap your brake, not so you slow down, if you tap that hard you are in trouble, but just to make the light go on, so funny to see them slam on their brakes haha, that sure leaves them the dust. I have made a couple n00by racers stall by doing this, it's just too funny

pointless as most have such slow reflexes your off the brakes well before they even click to what the red lights mean. only thing that makes them learn is a towball through the radiator.

670522 2008-05-20 08:14:00 Surfer Joe you forget that in NZ there are no roads long enough or straight enough to be able to use cruise control (certainly not on the Mainland)

Codswallop!!
I use it all the time. Mainly to avoid getting a ticket.

Recently I drove from Nelson to ChCh (in a 3L Outback) and I found that if I kept the CC at 105 kph, then the computer told me my fuel consumption was 10.8 km/l. But if I tweaked the CC up a bit, the km/l started dropping. I thinks it's a lot to do with revs. 105 kph on a flat road is 2000 rpm in the Outback.

670523 2008-05-20 10:19:00 I think it has a bit to do with the aerodynamic drag which can rise with the square of the speed.
(You might be surprised how much fuel it takes to shove a roof rack and ladder along at 100kph. Ladder design is far from optimal streamlining for some reason.)

670524 2008-05-20 20:53:00 I had a young bloke tailgating me last weekend for about 2Km, I was very worried he was going to run up my ass. Got the the next intersection and I went straight on and he turned left behind another car and ran into that one instead.

Real funny at the time it was so predictable.

I've done that before.

Parents have a Toyota Estima, tank of a thing, 4WD, supercharged, and a massive meaty towbar that sticks a good 8 inches out from the back bumper.....anyway, I was in Chch with it a few years back, and was being tailgated by some idiot in a done up Sylvia with a massive HKS intercooler kit on the front.

It was pissing down with rain, and he was right up my arse, and despite my best attempts at flashing my brake lights and everyone in the van pulling the finger at him, he would not back off.

So, slammed on the brakes. Lets just say his intercooler has a really nice towball shaped dent in the front of it.

You wouldn't know he had even hit the van. He sure learned his lesson. Damn expencive one it was too.

Dickhead.
