669854 2008-05-16 19:27:00 Yes Peak Oil is a worry.

But as I have said before on this forum the way to solve all these problems is for the UN to bring in immediate birth control methods.

Say one child per female, then forced sterilisation for her. That way the world population would start to fall from the crazy levels it is reaching.

But I also still say that New Zealand needs at least 10,000,000 people fo rity to be a vibrant , prosperous country.

I think you are basically right about the population, however the UN could take years to work through any type of agreement, and it could take decades to even stabilise the population, still needs to be done sure.

With already 6.6 billion people, the world's economy's seem likely to meltdown in less than 10 years, so we are a bit beyond population control helping the peak oil issue.

669857 2008-05-19 06:32:00 Yes, hold onto your hats I think it's going to be a rough ride, luckily we are in NZ and shouldn't have too many problems getting food although many things that we have taken for granted are going to change. zqwerty (97)

You may think as NZ is a farming nation we will be fine. However we are now paying world commodity prices, as food becomes more scarce around the world the price goes up, it will increase here to match unless the government legislates to stop that somehow.

Secondly our farms also heavily rely on Oil with fertilisers and pesticides, not to mention tractors, havestors and food transport etc.

Countries that start early to prepare for peak oil will do much better than those that ignore it. For example we need to be building more Hydro dams as they are incredibly more efficient/cost effective than Solar, or Wind.
We won't be able to do that with a seriously weakened economy.

669859 2008-05-19 21:57:00 Right about the Hydro dams, we urgently need two in Auckland, 1 in Wellington 3 in Christchurch, and one in Dunedin. To avoid problems with land use etc. they could be built in a deep part of the harbour. No visual pollution, and a good year round water supply.
Now, what's next.

Makes me laugh, see how green you are when your family is starving :)

669861 2008-05-19 23:44:00 Why do we need Peak Oil?
We don't have squeaky peaks.

By around 2025 Oil productions are estimated to be around 1/2 of what they are now?. Saudi Arabia already cut there production for example last year to conserve there rapidly dwindling reserves.

Mans impact on Global Warming is going to be largely solved by "Peak Oil" whether you like it or not in the next 40 years.

Peak oil and global warming are closely related, the worlds media are focusing on the smaller issue of global warming.
