However, you must admit that the availability of firearms, and the whole firearm culture, derives from the right of citizens to bear arms as enshrined in your written constitution.

In a country submerged under a midden of firearms, and with the all-pervasive gun culture, it is hardly surprising that aliens will avail themselves of the odd shooter or twelve? The bigger the better and the more rapid firing, big magazine types as shown in your story.Likely the thing went this way:

Since it is also legal in Mexico to own firearms but it is ILLEGAL to own the ammunition for them, this was going to be a run to South of the Border with ammunition for Mexican Nationals.

We had that happen in a shop where I worked in 2004.....

Some well-dressed gentleman of Latino persuasion arrived with his very clean and new-ish looking 1996 Chevrolet Suburban vehicle on the back of a tow truck...it won't run because it isn't getting fuel.

We run some tests and find that although the fuel pump in the tank is drawing about 11 amps, it isn't working...so it has to be replaced.

I didn't draw the job as I had a few other things going on at the same time...but another mechanic did.

He was in the process of removing the tank when he came and asked me to take a look and lend a hand.

The tank had some very recent scratches on it and it was very heavy on the jack that we also use to R&R transmissions. It felt like the tank was totally full of fuel..but the gauge had read that it only had ¼ full.

When we finally struggled to get it off the jack and on the ground, we opened the access port to get to the fuel pump and inside there were some very neat, wrapped packages of "?". We didn't know but it looked like drugs..and lots of it.

We snuck around to the phone and called the local police...and they got there in about 30 seconds..with a whole lot of white-unmarked cars and a few SWAT guys.

They thought this was the biggest drug bust in the history of their town...it looked like 300+ lbs (136kg) of drugs..which they were taking outta the tank thru the access holes. The owner of the vehicle had seen all the commotion with all the police and ATF cars that arrived and had by now non-nonchalantly started to walk down the street.

We pointed him out to the cops and they dragged him back in handcuffs saying that it wasn't his Suburban and he didn't know what they or we were talking about.

The drug dogs were called in and they went to "point" on the door panels and the seats...so the cops opened them up with knives and pry bars.

It wasn't drugs...it was ammunition that was in the tank.

It's against the law to carry drugs in a fuel tank..anyplace actually...but in the tank makes it a little hard to defend, especially in the quantities that he had...if it had been drugs.

BUT carrying ammunition in a fuel tank....although somewhat dangerous...is NOT illegal by any illegal citizen even a Mexican National in the US.

It IS illegal in Mexico.

He was running drugs UP to the US and bringing ammunition DOWN to Mexico..but you think they would have given him a can of gas...(he was about 150 miles away from the border and that would take about 1/3rd or more of a tank to get there .... at least).

Makes for a lot more sense..economy-wise. They had to go both ways...might as well make it profitable both ways too.

The cops returned the whole vehicle to him...we repaired the fuel pump..but we left the ammo out of the tank solely for insurance liability reasons.

He paid in cash.

The cops had a good laugh..but were disappointed that they didn't have a good bust. They also gave him a US-ATF voucher for repairs to the interior upholstery and doors of his vehicle.
