669833 2008-05-15 23:24:00 Remember the last media hysteria - bird flu? What happened to all those "life-saving" drugs?

www.stuff.co.nz

Not to mention:
In statement in June 2006, the Government's drug buying agency Pharmac said while antibiotics did not offer protection against influenza viruses, it anticipated the supplies of antibiotics being used in cases of secondary bacterial infections.

It's what they do (Give or take a few assorted pedestrian varieties).

669836 2008-05-16 00:40:00 Drugs still there.

Bird flu infections deaths are steadily increasing world-wide, and the infections are starting to appear in first world countries (Germany, UK). I don't think anybody should laugh this one off so easily.

669837 2008-05-16 00:48:00 Yeah what would of happened if we were hit by the bird flu and didn't have these drugs.

669838 2008-05-16 01:15:00 The Spanish flu epedemic from 1918-1920 was of an avian strain. It killed between 20-200 million people.

If you are a Aucklander (Like I used to be 45yrs ago) have a look at the graves in Waikumite Cemetary

I think the gummint does some stupid things, on a very regular basis, but I think they had to prepare for this one.

669840 2008-05-16 02:10:00 The antibiotics stored make up less than 20% of the drugs stored. The drugs stored are anti-viral, and then some antibiotics for those that get bacterial infections as a side issue.

Sometimes the gummint do good things too, got to give 'em credit where it's due. Of course, if we are struck by a Spanish Flu-like pandemic, none of the nay-sayers will want anything, will they - or will they be first in line?

669841 2008-05-16 08:33:00 antibiotics did not offer protection against influenza viruses
The purpose of the antibiotics was to prevent any possible bacterial infection after being infected with bird flu virus.

Ask Al Gore.
As for the drugs. They would have been totaly useless if the virus had changed to human to human.
