805613 2009-08-31 05:05:00 I have a Canon LBP-3300 and absolutely swear by it, mainly because it uses a very common toner cartridge so it is easy to get cheap 3rd party replacements.

It looks like there are also cheap 3rd party compatibles for the 3100B so toner costs shouldn't be too bad.

2140 goes alright! A few people have them and they go just fine, will happily take non OEM toners or toner refills and if you ever need a new drum get something like this ( . ebay . com/DRUM-KIT-FOR-BROTHER-DR360-DR-360-HL-2140-HL-2170W_W0QQitemZ320347151099QQcmdZViewItem" target="_blank">cgi . ebay . com) from ebay which for $30 US incl delivery lets you rebuild your drum cheaply and your all set to print for another 10,000 pages .

805616 2009-09-01 09:36:00 I've had a Brother 2140 for about a year and no problems, got it as it was cheap and no other reason. Have yet to replace the toner. Sooo happy to see the end of damn inkjets jamming and inconsistant printing and high costs. Is there such a thing as a bad Laser?
However Canon do have a good rep for after sales esp. for cameras.

805617 2009-09-01 22:41:00 Happy with my 2140 but I do a VERY low mileage so I don't anticipate any wear problems for many years!

Inkjets are an expensive pain but now when I want to print colour, the damn thing wastes a ton of ink clearing its throat. Must print from it occasionally but regularly!

A tip I always recommend if the ink jet isn't networked but a local connection leave it fully powered off or leave its cable disconnected otherwise it "charges" the ink-heads every time you start your PC, draining your ink cartridge regardless if you were going to use it or not.

I haven't seen any of the mentioned models print but I just setup a Brother HL2150 which I guess is more or less like a big Brother to the Brother HL2140 - I thinks that the Brother HL2150 prints OK but the guy that uses it thinks it prints weak - meaning that the black is not as black as his Inkjet printouts , this might be something general about lasers versus inkjets , I don't know because I only rarely gets to print out the same things on both laser and inkjet .

The Brother HL2140 ( . brother . co . nz/Public/ProductDetails . asp?ProductID=HL2140#specification" target="_blank">www . brother . co . nz) is a power-hungry s . o . b . , it uses 460W printing , 80W standby and 5W sleep
where the Canon LBP3100B ( . canon . co . nz/products/printers/laser_printers_low_medium_volume/lbp3100_specs . aspx" target="_blank">www . canon . co . nz) uses 280W printing and 2W standby (they don't mention sleep and the two manufactures may have different defenitions in their descriptions of standby - I don't know) .

The Brother HL2140 ( . brother . co . nz/Public/ProductDetails . asp?ProductID=HL2140#specification" target="_blank">www . brother . co . nz) on the other hand got 4 times the buffer memory, 8MB versus the 2MB, of the Canon LBP3100B ( . canon . co . nz/products/printers/laser_printers_low_medium_volume/lbp3100_specs . aspx" target="_blank">www . canon . co . nz) + Brother offer you a $50 cashback on the Brother HL2140 ( . brother . co . nz/Public/ProductDetails . asp?ProductID=HL2140#specification" target="_blank">www . brother . co . nz) between september 1st and 30th , 2009 .

Also the Canon LBP3100B ( . canon . co . nz/products/printers/laser_printers_low_medium_volume/lbp3100_specs . aspx" target="_blank">www . canon . co . nz) makes more noise when printing (Max . 62DB) than the Brother HL2140 ( . brother . co . nz/Public/ProductDetails . asp?ProductID=HL2140#specification" target="_blank">www . brother . co . nz) which states noise level when printing to 51 DB (A) .

Canon LBP3100B ( . canon . co . nz/products/printers/laser_printers_low_medium_volume/lbp3100_specs . aspx" target="_blank">www . canon . co . nz) got Print Speed of 16 pages per minute versus the
Brother HL2140's ( . brother . co . nz/Public/ProductDetails . asp?ProductID=HL2140#specification" target="_blank">www . brother . co . nz) stated 22 pages per minute .

On a more personal level I wouldn't buy a printer without ethernet capability (though be warned that more manufacturer's standard net software or setup "sucks" to extreme degree) .
I myself uses a second-hand office-class laser-printer that'll use (and print great) with "compatible-toner-cartridges" .
(I recently spotted MSE toner cartridges (http://www . mse . com/) , I haven't tried them yet because they were sold out when I ordered re-fills , but they seem "convincing" so I would like to point them out to whoever reads this) .

I hopes that my "contribution" here is of use . . . . . .
