673224 2008-05-28 22:07:00 A quick Google (and I mean 60 seconds work...pctek) reveals this:

"Can I get an Invalid's Benefit?

So it seems that Invalid's benefit is not work tested....

www.winz.govt.nz

I can tell you that it most certainly IS work tested.
Yes you may qualify for invalids if you meet those conditions, although often you may have to meet with their own doctors, but it does NOT mean you can happily work or run a business and still receive this benefit.

I don't have to Google, I can tell you this as my brother is on it.

You give WINZs call centre a quick ring and ask them this.

Can't work 15 hours or more - must be a very, very part time business then.

And if it was, he would have to declare his earnings to WINZ. They would then look at it again and perhaps change his status to Sickness instead - which means he has to report to the job brokers.

You're quite right. My statement was incomplete. I should have said:

"It seems that if you are blind with a specified level of restriction in your visual field or in the sharpness of your vision then it is not work tested."

You will note the use of the word "or" in the WINZ list of criteria - meaning that you need only meet one of the conditions to qualify.

And the Trademe member who your link referenced is blind as far as WINZ is concerned - so can work and receive the Invalids Benefit.

He can't work and receive the benefit. If he earns money then it must be declared, he can earn $80 before tax per week and after that his benefit is deducted.

He says he has a part time staff member so if he can afford to pay someone else as well he shouldn't recieve any benefit at all.

673230 2008-05-29 01:21:00 /blabber about my WINZ story, don't read if you don't want to.

It sucks to see this type of stuff happen because when I had a sporting accident and had just finished school I asked what could help me until I get back on my feet. I was 18 at the time and they put me on the Under 21 Unemployment Benefit where I had to attend a seminar 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. Are they serious? Dead serious apparently. Hey its only a head injury with vision, speech and memory problems later on in life but you can still walk right?

Now because I was underage I would only get 60% or so of the normal benefit unless I could verify I was independent from my parents. But I could not prove this as I was living with a mate, thus no bills, only cash under the table. The bills where in his name anyway! So that didn't pass and I was paid a whole $115 each week. Noodles then became my best friend.

Now because it was a head injury I was not allowed to drive but it wasn't that bad as it was only 40 minute walk to get to the WINZ building. Then I had to actually talk with other people who can't find work and do these ridicules tests while feeling like my head is about to explode. Now if I missed a day I would be kicked off the benefit and had to restart the whole process again so I went along with it while trying to sort out a better method to all of this with my case managers. The fifth day rolls by and somehow nothing had changed, I stopped going and decided to goto a different GP who put me down as overstressed and to take a few days off. WINZ didn't like this and told me I would have to restart the seminar again next month but for the meantime they will continue the payments.

I then left Auckland for monetary reasons, they somehow found out and immediately canceled payments (which was harsh as it was the same day I went into the local WINZ building). I'm now living in what most would call a very low income area while working and studying full-time to get back what I once had. It is quite possible that if they had done things properly I would have recovered and been looking for work until I got one.

They can support an Asthma patient for 19 years who smokes a pack a day but can't support the people who will be the working front in years to come. If I had known earlier I would of said my Asthma was bad instead of mentioning the head injury

But yeah, thanks WINZ :annoyed:

Silly silly, you told the truth didnt you.....you will have to work on that!

673231 2008-05-29 01:26:00 Yep there are a lot of people out there who take what they can get and demand more even if they are not in need. I am currently on disability as I have a condition that is incurable and needs constant medical attention but ...... I work full time. The disability covers my medication which at times can be very expensive ($1 per pill for a long term pain relief) .... It only covers my medical needs and generally is under $10 per week unless I start a higher costing treatment. It frustrates me when I hear of people who take advantage of the system as it makes those who generally do need help not want to ask as it puts them into the same category as the bludgers. I am thankful for the disability because if I did not get the medical help from that assistance, my son and I would never be able to survive financially. :punk never-u-mind (6500)
673232 2008-05-29 01:33:00 Thats the other thing too is medical stuff aint cheap. And that really sux! rob_on_guitar (4196)
