805440 2009-09-08 04:50:00 Yeah, I know I said I would give up but I'm finding it difficult to let this computer go - lol! I was searching thru the forums to see if anyone else had the problem of no beeps at POST and came across this:

Computer Problem Diagnoses (forums.pcworld.co.nz)

The similarities I notice are:

Computer doesn't beep in POST
Frozen display screen
FDD not working
PSU 300W Hyena

The PSU is the only hardware we have in common. He also mentioned a noisy fan. I'm half-deaf and noticed a high-pitch whining from the computer got louder over the years; to the point I put the unit under my desk recently. I presumed it was a fan, unless Seagate & Western HDDs are loud? Actually, the pitch would go higher everytime I moved the mouse.

Following are the spec's when I bought the computer:

Intel processor # 320 CPU (Celeron 2.4GHz/533FSB/256 KB Cache), Box product with CPU Cooler
Elite ECS 661FX-M, SiS661FX, Socket478, 800MHz FSB, AGP8X, Video&Audio&LAN, SATA, Micro ATX Motherboard
256MB DDR400 RAM 184pin (PC3200)/Rambo/Seitec/Legend
80GB Seagate Barracuda ATA-100/7200rpm IDE HDD/2MB cache
52X CD-ROM/E-IDE (LG Brand)
56K PCI Internal Modem, V.90 V.92 ready (156LVP/F4) (Software Modem)
1.44MB FDD
Hyena Midi Tower ATX-132 Case, 300watt, Front USB, Air Guid, Blue Colour, with FDD

Over the last couple of years I added:

Western Digital HDD 80GB IDE
DSE Cable IDE UDMA 66/100MHz
DSE 512MB DDR PC3200 400MHz RAM
LG Internal IDE DVD Writer with Lightscribe

So the computer was running two HDDs, two Optical Drives, one FDD, one Brother MFC-640CW, one HP Deskjet 845C and one Dynalink RTA1025W modem. Hmmm ... maybe I did kill it?

*quietly back out of thread*

805441 2009-09-08 05:00:00 Well next thing to get rid of then is the PSU. Replace it then see what happens Speedy Gonzales (78)

You just reminded me that I have done this before. When I bought the WD 80GB I made that the primary drive so reinstalled WinXP and had to ring up MS for a number to key in. The original Seagate 80GB became the slave drive for My Documents.

Man, I will be such a happy camper if this works. Found a Thermaltake 430W Power Supply. Product Code: XH9032 at DSE and there is one left. Will be back in five minutes - lol!

None of the capacitors on your board LOOK bad (although that doesn't mean they aren't)

Could well be the Hyena PSU, which, being a Hyena, has probably got worse capacitors in it than the motherboard (or they get hotter and die faster)

Also, it's just junk - and if it's making a whining noise as well...

I've got a Hyena PSU which has capacitors so bad any PC you connect it to will fail to POST. Blank screen, no beep, nothing.

After replacing it, the original PC it was in worked perfectly.

If you are interested, please post some pictures of the inside of the Hyena...
