2009-09-01 22:05:00 | Where you wrote : I unplugged the CD-ROM from IDE2 and plugged it into IDE1 and it went thru the P.O.S.T. so I was able to enter the BIOS (finally). All the drives were on AUTO. That often indicates there is a hardware problem. For some reason the Second IDE controller always seems to start to fail first. If you have changed the CMOS battery, and still cant get it to start, along with the floppy not working something has failed usually. Noticed in one of the pictures - you had the floppy as the second boot device - if you can get into the BIOS - change it to third, or disable it - unplug the floppy - that could have failed. Either that or the Motherboard is dieing. Being a socket 478 its reasonably old and my be passed its used by date so to speak. Try this -- Get into the BIOS - change the Boot device to HDD/CD/Floppy - then disconnect the CD drive and floppy from the board/system - so it only has the HDD to boot from. See what happens. If it boots up, turn off and reconnect the CD drive., then retry, if it boots, go back into the BIOS and change the boot order, to CD/HDD/Floppy. IF you cant get into the BIOS, disconnect the CD and Floppy and try again. When it stops at MUP in safe mode, how long have you left it - sometimes it can take a while to get past there - I have seen them take up to 15 minutes sometimes.

2009-09-01 22:24:00 | Hmmmmm, Ive had pretty much the same problem on two socket 478 systems and never did find the problem. The motherboards complete with processors now reside in a box clearly marked Junk. Anyway good luck. Ill dig mine out again if you manage to resolve the issue.:D

2009-09-03 00:45:00 | Well, no luck. It just ain't letting me in the bios no matter what I do now. Errr ... I haven't changed the CMOS battery so I guess that's my next step? Crap, I didn't realise MUP in safe mode can take up to 15 minutes. I only waited a minute. Silly me. Well, at least I was able to connect the HDD as a slave on another computer and copy all my files onto DVD. *whew*

2009-09-07 06:04:00 | Computer bought in November 2004 Connected HDDs to another computer as slave - BIOS detected Long beep when no RAM installed. No beeps after it's installed Attached another FDD to computer and not detected by BIOS Changed CMOS battery HERE (homepages.slingshot.co.nz) Got back into BIOS HERE (homepages.slingshot.co.nz) Changed boot order to HDD / CD Disabled FDD and unplugged floppy Restarted and back to square one HERE (homepages.slingshot.co.nz) I think I'll give up now and let my computer R.I.P. I have really appreciated all the assistance I've received here and have learnt a lot and especially thank you for your patience Speedy. I am now looking for a basic upgrade box for Microsoft Office and broadband. My budget only allows $350.00 and I have found some ... I think? e-One Computers - Upgrade Box 1MKV (www.eoneonline.co.nz) Promax Online - Intel Budget upgrade Box (www.promax.co.nz) Ascent - Barebones Kit (www.ascent.co.nz) Am I looking at the right thing for Upgrade Boxes? Does anyone have any recommendations so I can pay now and have it delivered tomorrow? Oh ... I won't need a DVD-ROM since I bought a new one last year, so will install that.

2009-09-07 06:11:00 | No probs :) The last screenshot looks exactly what happened to a mate of mine. Thats what his post screen looked like, a few mths ago. I had to flash the BIOS to fix it. I think his mobo or BIOS / BIOS updates are shot / corrupt. Because its done exactly the same thing recently. Except now it says recovering BIOS and looking for the cd or floppy. Which means its (the BIOS is probably corrupt), but windows still boots. After every 2nd - 3rd reset / reboot. But, whether the devices will work properly, is another matter | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2009-09-07 08:03:00 | The first upgrade box is probably the best deal as it appears to be complete except for operating system (you do realise that you wont be able to use the XP disk (or hdd OS installation) from the HP box as it is OEM and not transferable), PSU is low powered (may be ok for basic Celeron, and no additional video card). The second is factually incorrect in two or three places, says at the top it is Intel then AMD then Intel again, also the ram type is incorrect for a 775 mobo (should be DDR2-667 or similar and should be at least 1GB, not 256MB of DDR400): seems very suspect, if they cant get that right. Also no OS. Third, very barebones indeed, has no OS/CPU/ram/drives and the power supply would be small/insufficient (as in first paragraph; if you wanted to upgrade the comp at all (Core2Duo or better, video card etc, you'd need at least a 450watt PSU or better)).

2009-09-07 08:07:00 | There are a few 775 mobos, that do support DDR ram tho | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2009-09-07 09:34:00 | Ooops ... I didn't notice the third one was missing all those things. I guess I'll go for the first one since they are the company we bought from previously. I am guessing it is a good price unless I can get something better at the same price? Regarding the OS, we bought three computers and were still using Win98. (cheap non-profit organisation) - lol! A couple of years after that we purchased three copies of WinXP from this same company. So, are we not able to install those on the new computer?

2009-09-07 10:23:00 | If you haven't already, take the IDE/SATA cable out, straighten it if it is IDE, and let it cool. I have had this problem a couple of times, and the first time, it was just that the bent cable was heating up quickly, and so, when it cooled down a couple minutes later, it worked. If that doesn't work, replace the cable. | raydan42 (13837) | |
2009-09-07 10:37:00 | A couple of years after that we purchased three copies of WinXP from this same company. So, are we not able to install those on the new computer? Cant see why not. Normally once you activate, it stays on the MS server for about 3 mths I think (or 6) then drops off. In case you reinstall / reactivate again. So, you maybe able to, if you havent installed any of the versions recently
