| 672889 | 2008-05-27 03:00:00 | That amount on Gas is crazy . I think we need to get you into something a LOT more economical . SJ are you a retired billionaire or something? No . . . not at all . . . the costs of fuel are covered by the guy I am helping . . and although the prices are steep nowadays . . . it's factored in to the things he does . Is it any wonder that the US economy is so screwed up? We feed our cars more money than we eat . I am on a Federally-fixed retirement and it only goes up for inflation indexes once a year . . . so next year's oughta be good . . . if the US Gummermint lasts that long . . . nyuck, nyuck . Asking here: Can I live in NZ for just $2377 . 00 USD /month? I've told youse guys b4 though . . that we have to travel LONG distances to work, hobbies and entertainment . . . and although I am not at the moment driving my little Isuzu, I am getting pretty good mileage-per-tankful for the vehicle I drive . I also carry: two Skill saws a worm-gear saw power drill(s) screw guns 20 gallon compressor air hoses (lots!!) pneumatic nail guns general carpenter's tools, nails, screws, hammers, pry bars . . etc automotive wrenches and ratchet sets (at least three different sizes . . 1/4, 38/ 1/2 inch drives) Bench Makita miter saw and table w/sawhorses pipe threading power head and dies pipe wrenches, assorted metal-cutting bandsaw and hacksaws . . . etc . winches, straps, cables and such fishing gear . . (in case a fishing tournament should break out on the way) with 4 flyrods and lots of tackle All this has to fit in my vehicle . . and I try to carry just what I need . Good thing I don't do any of this stuff professionally . . . it's a past-time vocation/hobby to me as I get to the "Golden Years" . Errrrrrrr . . . . the fishing stuff I ALWAYS carry . Ya never know! :banana It is no problem (or it WASN'T anyway until the fuel-cost spike) for a person here to travel over 150 miles each way to work . Now most people have to decide who/what will get paid this month . . . the gasoline credit cards, the mortgage or the insurance . . . oh . . did I say anything about food or clothing? |

Base yourself maybe in a house on the edge of Lake Dunstan, or Lake Wanaka, or around the Central Otago area and throw your fishing line out the back door to catch your dinner each night . Great trout fishing in NZ . Some things more expensive I would think but a much slower, simpler, nicer lifestyle . In spite of Helen it is a great place to live . |

| 672891 | 2008-05-27 03:09:00 | Did I read somewhere that the US has only 6% of the world's population, yet they use over 60% of the world's resources? That may be 6% of the LITERATE world's population with cars, mortgages and kids to feed all the while driving 100+ miles to work > each way. Ya can't count the Eskimos unless they got a chunk of the Alaska Pipeline..as we sure didn't here in the lower 48. ALL that fuel is wrangled away by BAP to Japan and the rest of the Orient. Ya can't count the aboriginal natives who haven't yet seen Paris. Ya can't count all the camel-drivers either..who can't get sand tires for the Mercedes and RRs. Ya can't count many Croats, Ukrainians, Africans and Slovaks either...their govt's won't let them have cars or even light bulbs. So..in sheer numbers..why YES! The US uses a lot of fuel...but not in the skewed "factoid" numbers that you pop. Not defending the US here..just be careful with hip-shots. 'k? Come to think of it...isn't the US also the biggest user of light bulbs? BRB: Taking the wife out for ice cream...but it's a short drive....less than 10 miles each way. |
