| 672376 | 2008-05-25 12:21:00 | A guy gets to be a member of the Auckland Traffic Police. The sargeant tells him to go up Queen Street and do parking enforcement and be back by 3:00 pm Around 5:00 pm the guy is not yet back but he arrives a few minutes later. The sargeant asks for an explanation! "Well I went up Queen St as you asked and I was near the top and I was told there was an accident around the corner. So I went around the corner and investigated and found a car had hit a horse." The sargeant says, " why did it take so long?" "Well I could not spell Karangahape St so I had to drag the horse to Queen St." I am assuming the firing and rehiring wasn't because of the (in)ability of the teachers, Joe, or was it? Not totally sure about the standard of literacy in Godszone, either, lakewoodlady. One of my adult students had a business degree, but had difficulty with spelling. As he said, it wasn't the role of the universities to teach spelling and he managed to get around that. A few years ago it wouldn't have mattered as much, 'Madam Secretary' (bless her), would do the necessary alterations and additions, and if she was worth her salt, would be discreet about it. Those days have gone, probably forever. Yes, there is acknowledgement at top level that something needs to be done to remedy the poor literacy skills, or lack thereof. Let's hope they follow through raising the standard. |

Not totally sure about the standard of literacy in Godszone, either, lakewoodlady . One of my adult students had a business degree, but had difficulty with spelling . As he said, it wasn't the role of the universities to teach spelling and he managed to get around that . A few years ago it wouldn't have mattered as much, 'Madam Secretary' (bless her), would do the necessary alterations and additions, and if she was worth her salt, would be discreet about it . Those days have gone, probably forever . Yes, there is acknowledgement at top level that something needs to be done to remedy the poor literacy skills, or lack thereof . Let's hope they follow through raising the standard . No . . it was purely greed and money . . the teachers could stay if they accepted the rehire and dropped any/all claims to past-due salaries . In my opinion, they shouldn't get them in the first place . Incompetence should not be rewarded . It might also have been a timely reminder that their tenure hung by a thread and the state and the union couldn't protect them if the city wanted them out or off the rolls . Kinda a double edged sword there . I've never liked unions . . even though I hadda join the Teamsters to work at Laura Scudders a bunch of years ago . . but they paid for it, initiation and dues and all . I never attended a meeting . Like the deadwood teachers, there was a guy at Scudders who was working on an in-frame overhaul of a 350 Detroit "Squeezer" and he worked at it every day . . . busy . . . and had his hands dirty 24-7 . When I finally quit in 2 years, he was still on the same job . It normally takes a week to do the overhaul . He had union tenure . BTW: The Hemet city council also voted themselves a 43% pay increase . . . . just like the same 43% they "needed" last year and got too . The magic number - 43% - is just below the value that needs a voter referendum or general election to approve, so this way by taking 1-percent less they don't need to bother the citizens with all the city business stuff . I never got a 43% pay raise . . . never . . and especially not two years in a row . Bless 'em! |
