2008-06-01 22:27:00 | Maybe introduce more frequent driving tests (e.g. quarterly) for those over a certain age for those over 75 years. Though might have to involve referendums, consultation, etc with appropriate politicians/community groups, etc.. | kahawai chaser (3545) | |
2008-06-01 23:20:00 | Maybe introduce more frequent driving tests (e.g. quarterly) for those over a certain age for those over 75 years. Though might have to involve referendums, consultation, etc with appropriate politicians/community groups, etc.. I'm 75 but still better than so many other drivers I see on the roads. I still have very fast reactions, NEVER ever drink and drive and the use of cigarettes has always been banned in my cars. I never allow the use of the radio when I am driving. Cell phones are out of course. About 8 countries driving and a very good record. So now I am hardly ever using the car (I can happily avoid night driving or bad weather driving) should I be subject to more tests unless it applies to everybody. No of course not. I would like to make an appeal now. Stop referring to older people as though they are a different race. We have always done it. Old man Flanagan who used to chase us kids off the allotments in the early 1940s had obviously to us always been an old man. In my mind he is still chasing misbehaving kids. But we should say "When we get older perhaps we should be tested more" rather than "Old people should be tested more" Perhaps doing that we would all become more tolerant and thinking individuals. PS I maybe 75 but I am not an older person. So there. Tom

2008-06-01 23:42:00 | Apologies Thomas. I wasnt meaning to offend either. but that link did say they were driving the wrong way....so maybe their age is part of it. My mother still drives and she is 75 as well. so its not that i am against older drivers, just some may not be as good as others. Im actually amazed that you ( all people) get a license and thats it, you dont have to resit it every so many years to make sure you are a safe driver / legal, no matter what age you are. Have a nice day. beetle:)

2008-06-02 00:14:00 | As in nearly every other aspect of life, it is not necessarily the age - or lack of - the individual. Some people are bloody awful at 20, or 30, or 40. Some will gain skills that will last until they are 100, some will cop out at 50. Some will never learn. You can't say that everyone must cease driving at a certain age and I think that the authorities recognise that to a certain extent and test older drivers. Thomas: I do agree. Why must older people be referred to as a separate race? I'm about ten years behind you and I don't see myself as "older." Besides, everything still looks the same from where I see it. Its just looking in the mirror that's a bit different. I still have the same appreciation for a pretty face, a nice pair of boobs and a sexy pair of legs. That never changes - thank goodness!

2008-06-02 00:25:00 | PS I maybe 75 but I am not an older person. So there. Psychologists would classify 75 as early old age. You're properly old when you get to 100.

2008-06-02 00:46:00 | I would prefer if people understood that 75 is indeed old. Is not the average life expectancy still approximately 72 for males ? ... if that were the case I would say 75 with that view in mind would be 'past the due by date'. You cant get a license until a certain age. I think it was 15 when I got mine. You can't drink in a pub until you are 18 legally .. So what is the big deal about 75 year old drivers being tested more regular... Of course they should .. the body 'generally' is on the way out, eyesight is getting worse, hip replacements causing problems and blah blah blah... so we have 1 lucky punter who is fit, healthy etc. I would find it hard to believe this is the 'norm' or 'average' for 75 year olds. I think its a very good idea..
