674344 2008-05-31 22:23:00 What do you recommend in the way of Hard disk DVD recorders? eg HD size, brand etc. Needs to be able to write external sources to DVD (eg VHS tapes).

I have a limited budget ($450) but would be prepared to buy from TradeMe if it meant getting a better one for less $.

EDIT: Are the HDs upgradable? (to standard IDE/SATA drives?

674345 2008-05-31 22:47:00 I have a Sony RDR-HX750 which works fine. 160Gb HDD. I am happy enough with it. It has Hard Drive recording and DVD Recording, also you can connect a second Recorder to it for dubbing eg a DVD/VHS player, or a DV camera etc.

Keep in mind that some HDD/DVD recorders have a Zone limitation on them for our Zone 4 for DVD playback, but there might be a work around for that.

I think mine was around $600 but that was a while ago they have probably come down in price since then or even had a model upgrade since then.

I understand they have 3.5HDD's in them as to whether they can be changed I don't know. mine is still under extended warranty so it will not get opened up for a few years yet.

There is a huge thread on this topic somewhere on pcworld forum.

Just remember that DVD recorders can't record Freeview.

? - I am recording freeview daily on my Sony HDD recorder. It has limitations though, which is possibly what you mean? It records only in Standard definition, so the true HD content that is on TV3 is degraded a bit. Still ends up as a pretty good picture though. A lot better than SKYTv, which I used to think was OK.

Sony has had some pretty good prices lately on their HDD recorders - the My Sony site has points specials (if you are signed up and have collected points) wher there is up to $200 off some units. Should be like prices in shops soon I would think.

You got sucked in to buying the extended warranty ? That is a scam.
You are covered by the CGA.

Not so on everything.

iPods would be one of the best things for extended warranty due to their battery life. It is not a scan as I see it and it is up to the consumer to choose if they want it or not.

674351 2008-06-01 01:50:00 My Sony 250g HDD/DVD recorder died after 16 months (1 year guarantee) I sent it to sony, came back fully repaired frieght paid by them both ways cost $0-00:thumbs:

So I see no real need for an extended warranty. No problems since nice unit.

674352 2008-06-01 02:06:00 I think you were lucky. I could not get mine fixed via Harvey Norman after 15 months. I also have a friend with a surround system from Harvey Norman she is not having any luck getting repaired as it is a month out of warranty. It had been repaired twice during warranty, so it is probably a lemon HN don't want any more dealings with. Bantu (52)
674353 2008-06-01 02:26:00 Both Consumer and Fairgo think extended warranties are scams.
