| 673953 | 2008-05-30 10:59:00 | I have noticed an increase on the number of old posts being dredged up, by spammers, or people doing google searches on a subject, and then posting a reply to a subject that is no longer relevent. Spammers are doing it because they can get a good google ranking by linking to their website from pressf1 which has a page ranking of 6. Would it be a good idea to lock old posts, say after 3 months of a post last being posted to? | robbyp (2751) | ||

Locking is a good idea but I'm against deletion as the old posts are sometimes useful PressF1 admins & Mods dont delete posts unless they are Spam or break the PressF1 rules, and that policy has been around for a number of years (long before I came to the old PressF1 back in 2002), and I dont think that policy will every change. |

Just had too many posts today that have been dredged up by these spammers. It is very annoying when you go to reply to a post, only to find out that the orignal poster asked the question 10 years ago! I suspect it will only get worse, as it is a very good way for a website spammer, to increase their page rank, by posting their link in pressf1. |

| 673958 | 2008-05-30 12:24:00 | There are forums (usually in USA) where you cannot leave or display a active link in a post, and in your signature, until certain conditions are met; e.g. for Mylot (500 posts are required, Digital Point (a very active web master forum, where you have to reply to about 20 posts, and wait a week or two, before any links are activated). Yahoo Answers and Article/Blog directories require links to be generally related to the posts - or posts are deleted. In slashdot, posts are reviewed first to pass/fail for submission, and comments/replies (sometimes hundreds) do not all display, and are ranked I think before displaying... Perhaps PC World should adopt such policies... |

| 673959 | 2008-05-30 12:29:00 | When those earlier threads came up, the consensus was that anything older than 6 months would be locked. And that doesn't mean people can't read them, its just that they cant reply to them. Some people were afraid of that. |

I think that is a good idea, becasue we can still search them for reference, but spammers can't then post their link in them. |

However, certain people deciding to quote the spam in its entirety are not being helpful either  If a Mod doesn't notice a user has decided to quote the spam further down the thread, then it gets left there - doing the job for the spammer . I'm going to remove all the "commenting" posts that occurred after the spammer made their post in the above mentioned thread and that will return the thread to its original place in history . From my experience, the far majority of spam recently is just being posted in the most recent threads . |
