675159 2008-06-04 01:30:00 Christchurch is a city of extreme temps. In winter (aka NOW) it's not unusual for my breath to be visible when waking up/going to bed. In summer one usually lies around in ones underpants... Yeah... And wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org) has this to say about the Christchurch Nor wester:

"Christchurch has a temperate climate, with maximum temperatures in January ranging from 15 °C to 25 °C (59–77 °F) (often reaching 30 °C/86 °F or higher), and maximum temperatures in July ranging from 5 °C to 15 °C (41–59 °F). The summer climate is often moderated by a sea breeze from the northeast, but a record temperature of 41.6 °C (107 °F) was reached in February 1973. A notable feature of the weather is the nor'wester, a hot föhn wind that occasionally reaches storm force, causing widespread minor damage to property.[5]

In winter it is common for the temperature to fall below 0 °C (32 °F) at night. There are on average 70 days of ground frost per year.[6] Snow falls occur on average once or twice a year in the hill suburbs and about once or twice every two years on the plain.

On cold winter nights, the surrounding hills, clear skies, and frosty calm conditions often combine to form a stable inversion layer above the city that traps vehicle exhausts and smoke from domestic fires to cause smog. While not as bad as smog in Los Angeles or Mexico City, Christchurch smog has often exceeded World Health Organisation recommendations for air pollution."

Argh, it used to say that the NW wind was associated with increases in suicides.

There is nothing extreme about CHCH or any other NZ city Temperatures. Many European and US eastern cities drop 'way' under Freezing in winter and often have many days of heavy settled snow (which CHCH only gets about once a decade to the same degree).

New York City for example often drops to -10C and lower in winter and hits about the same as CHCH in summer.

Very true. I have sat in the "warm" afternoon August sun in Ireland. My hosts were removing clothing down to next to nothing! They wondered why I did not removed my jersey. I assured them that once the temperature rose above 15C I would consider it. Not that it wasn't pleasant, sitting in the sun. It's just that it would have been nicer if we were able to move a trifle closer.

Conversely, my sister-in-law, from Canada, felt overdressed in t-shirt and shorts in the depths of an Irish winter.:horrified Strange people, these Irish. Lovely people, but strange.
