I'm not sure why but it may be something to do with Apple not having any trouble with moving their product they just have a few problems keeping up with the "unexpected" demand on things like iPods, iMacs etc (more so in the US than in NZ). Your $1000 Compaq is not a very good comparison with a $4000 Mac which has very good profit margin it would be better compared with a Mac mini or 20" iMac as prices go.

Yeah, Apple hardware(accessories) can have pretty high markups, especially when you're talking about mice/keyboards, but thats just the same as the other hardware. Last time I saw a computer with any considerable margin however, was a very very long time ago (except Acer desktops which *somehow* manage good margins while maintaining lower prices than other brands for similar spec) and Apple products have never been high up in that list, at least not at store level (RRP tends to be very close to their cost price, I suppose it changes if you work somewhere like the Apple store - which I don't). Obviously they are still making big $$ like everybody else, though it all happens at the Steve Jobs leve :banana

oooooh yes!!!

It wasn't a Mac though.

Fortunately in most cases there are other cheaper alternatives especially where RAM is concerned. For things like Mac keyboards and mice etc which are designed to go with iMacs and MacPros as the consistent appearance is part of the package. For things like RAM which Apple gets from Samsung just like every other PC manufacturer - I would prefer to source that from the web at a MUCH more reasonable price, even the high spec RAM for the MacPro.

Contrary to popular opinions of this website, Apple doesn't actually have a problem selling peripherals or hardware (most of it in the US).
