Good on you for ignoring their piffle and looking beyond there crap.

Imo an Asus toy is just adding an extra difficulty to the equation, I would just get a suitable laptop that fits her budget.

What is her budget?

And as for Apple and their pricing, I bet a laptop comparable to mine would cost $1000 more, But that bet is redundant as I also bet Apple don't make a laptop that is comparable to mine, Even though mine falls into the budget range of what's available.

674170 2008-05-31 21:55:00 and there are plenty of accounting packages that will run on the Mac like Xero. These day all communications are done via email.

Not quite correct - a lot of communications are still verbal - you know people look at each other and talk. A weird strange method I agree but I must admit my working days when we just looked over each others cubicles and actually spoke seem infinitely preferable to any email system.

My friend is also in an occupation where all work is on Windows. MAC die hards seem to ignore this point at times. No matter how good the old BETA and Phillips tape decks were nobody considered buying them after a very short period of time.

Funny nobody has yet popped up telling me that if we want a lightweight computer costing the minimum amount then the only one to consider is the brand X that they have.

I wait with bated breath.

That's your problem VS. You are only 17. When you turn 18, (the age of enlightment) your brain might start to work better. Then you will start to see the silly, shallow garbage, that you spout on these pages under your different pseudonyms.

The article is referring to the length of time the PC user had been using Windows rather than his age which is actually about 40yrs I think.

674173 2008-05-31 22:52:00 Look at main stream laptops. Toshiba IBM HP. Get extended warranty with it IMHO it is well worth the extra expense.

I would not buy an NEC or an oddball brand with your money, let alone my own.

If the bulk of office communication is verbal them you can be what ever platform you want since person to person communication doesn't require a computer. As for working in a "Windows only" environment which is to be expected when working in an office, Macs now use MS Exchange. Either iWork08 or Office:Mac has been able to swap standard office files with Windows for some time so that is not a barrier to entry. OS X still has Entourage.

I think we are getting off the point again a little here . (But it makes for good discussion) .
The person under discussion is an amateur as regards computers .
The last thing I would do is offer her a laptop with two possible operating systems . In fact I would like to see her buy or scrounge a very old cheap computer and play with it first .
A very bad bit of advice which I have seen around ever since we started with computers is telling the absolute beginner to make a list of what they want the computer to do and then go and get one to suit . The absolute beginner really has no idea just what any computer can do . That is what they want guidance on .
