806960 2009-09-06 02:13:00 If you prefer RPM base - try PCLOS. If deb base - maybe Mepis. Both are supposed to be very user friendly for beginners. I can attest to Mepis - it's been very good for me (learning), and now almost 3 years later I package for their repositories. KDE 3.5.10 atm, but next version will be 4.3.1. If you have any issues - you'll get good advice on their forums as well.

Worth a shot if you really want Linux working and haven't tried either yet.

806961 2009-09-06 03:06:00 How much ram have you got SJ?

Why not give Fedora or OpenSuse a try?
Just download a Live CD and see what you think of them. If you want Fedora try it with Gnome, if you want OpenSuse try it with KDE. Both are great IMO.

OpenSuse will be slightly easier, methinks.

They both have an excellent support community on the forums.

The puter I want to use the thumb-drive in has 4gig RAM.

I want to try Open, and I saw KDE once I think in Ubuntu or Kubuntu - can't remember.

806963 2009-09-06 05:32:00 The only reason I use Linux is to use the free Program compiler. Sweep (90)
806964 2009-09-06 05:52:00 Sweep, you do realise that there are many free compilers for Windows as well? Which language[s] are you writing in? Erayd (23)

I have also used Python.

806966 2009-09-06 08:44:00 I would also like a COBOL compiler as well. Sweep (90)
806967 2009-09-06 13:42:00 Kubuntu is my favourite. Looks great with KDE 4.3.1

Athlon XP will have no problems, a 286 might

Definitely give it OpenSuse a go. It will run fines on those specs.

Get a live cd, play with it. See if you enjoy it - if you do install it. If not try another flavor.
