807768 2009-09-13 23:40:00 I thought 64 bit OS has compatible issues vs x86 ?

I'm thinking of moving (up?) to 64bit as well .

Application software programs (e . g . Office) has to be 64 bit or I can retain my x86 application programs? Is it hard to get 64 bit drivers for printers, etc?

I haven't gotten around to examine the Windows 7 aspects yet but with respect to Windows Vista I think that the "general rule" is that the 32 bit version will run 16 bit & 32 bit programs , where the 64 bit version will only run 32 bit and 64 bit programs . Also , no matter what people might say , it's a fact that a number of programs will not run on Vista or only runs with great difficulty , from Microsofts own list then for example the game "Age Of Mythology ( . microsoft . com/windows/compatibility/Details . aspx?type=Software&p=Age%20Of%20Mythology&v=Microsoft&uid=&pf=2&pi=9&c=PC%20Gaming&sc=Strategy&os=32-bit" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com)" will not run on the 32 bit version of Vista (64 bit status unknown) .

If interested you may browse Micrsosofts own compatability site : . microsoft . com/windows/compatibility/default . aspx" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com

You can also check the "Windows Vista RTM Software Compatibility List ( . iexbeta . com/wiki/index . php/Windows_Vista_Software_Compatibility_List#Heavy_Pr" target="_blank">www . iexbeta . com oblems . 2C_Currently_Incompatible)" , but one never knows what will actually fuction as Vista is updated now and then .

Should you have a Vista compatability problem you may also turn to places like :
"How to run software that is incompatible with Windows Vista ( . online-tech-tips . com/windows-vista/how-to-run-software-that-is-incompatible-with-windows-vista/" target="_blank">www . online-tech-tips . com)"
or
"Beginners Guides Making Old Software Compatible with Windows Vista - PCSTATS_com ( . pcstats . com/articleview . cfm?articleID=2268" target="_blank">www . pcstats . com)"

With respect to the hardware (driver) aspect then if you buy a new product from a trustworthy company that warrents that their product is 64 Bit compatible then , by now , the product probably usually is as they by now has had more time to get things to work !

807769 2009-09-16 13:06:00 Got my Vista sorted out, managed to find all the drivers except for Agere Win Modem. All my old software runs on it including Professional File running in Dos Box. Had a bit of trouble with the screen colours in Dos but this came right after I restricted the resolution to 640x480 in the shortcut compatibility tab.

The Windows 7 will have to wait until there are more drivers for it.
