675182 2008-06-03 01:24:00 Does anyone have tips for cleaning up old bricks? I've got around 300 that I'd like to get all the old mortar off, and was wondering what the easiest way to do this is?

I've got a bolster, and was considering trying an old hatchet too. Not too keen to use acid either.

I'm sure there must be a 'trick of the trade'? ;)

675183 2008-06-03 01:25:00 I did two double-fire place chimneys in an old house - about 4000 bricks. It was a bolster I used, man what a b*tch of a job. Use a wire brush or something if they need to look really good. The new path looked lovely though. ;)

If the mortar is really old, soaking the brick in water will make it easier to chip the mortar off.

It may work, the mortar may simply walk away in disgust.
