808160 2009-09-09 05:09:00 Having a strange problem here with this laptop, BSOD in windows and kernel panic in Linux pretty soon after booting (less than 15 minutes or so)

First time it happened, I tried memtest, ran 2 hours, 1 pass, 0 errors

It has 2x 1GB modules DDR333

Took one stick out, it ran fine for 4 hours this morning.

Then I removed that stick, and put the other stick in, in the other slot, ran for a further 4 hours this afternoon with no problems

Then I put the other stick back in, booted Slax, in 5 minutes the whole system locked up

Any suggestions - is it likely to be the RAM itself or the motherboard?

I do have a couple of 256MB sticks around somewhere I will try (if I can find them!)

808161 2009-09-09 07:51:00 What did the BSOD in windows say? Speedy Gonzales (78)
808162 2009-09-09 08:53:00 I think one was 0x000000D1.

I'll check event viewer

808163 2009-09-09 08:57:00 Did it show the name of a file / driver as well? What version of windows is it? Speedy Gonzales (78)
808164 2009-09-09 09:03:00 XP Home SP3

No filename. I originally thought it was a sound driver issue as the first BSOD happened when I was playing a CD, but since I also got crashes in Linux too I think it's something else.

Memtest passed so I discounted that but later on when I tried to run HDAT2 I got an error

"HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory"

808165 2009-09-09 09:12:00 This is what the error means (support.microsoft.com) Speedy Gonzales (78)
808166 2009-09-09 09:17:00 System errors (the only ones I could find in the system log)

Error code 100000d1, parameter1 00000048, parameter2 000000ff, parameter3 00000001, parameter4 8a51d962

Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 80598298, parameter3 b7ad67f8, parameter4 00000000

oops missed one:

Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 804e8432, parameter3 af9efc00, parameter4 00000000

So far running on 2x 256MB sticks, no crash yet, uptime 20 minutes...

808167 2009-09-09 09:23:00 I would say the ram is faulty then Speedy Gonzales (78)
808168 2009-09-09 09:30:00 It would appear that way...

But the 256MB sticks are of course a quarter the capacity of the others, and actually have half the amount of chips (although the chips are half the _physical_ size - don't know how that works)

Wouldn't a fault in the memory controller also cause these symptoms? eg: with double the amount of chips, the higher current drain (I assume it would be higher) makes something run out of spec?

Love to tweak some settings of course but this is a laptop so the BIOS is worse than pointless

808169 2009-09-09 09:40:00 Are the 1 GB sticks double or single sided? Maybe it doesnt like double sided sticks? Some mobos dont Speedy Gonzales (78)
