678686 2008-06-15 20:45:00 Come on Paul

Hi Guys

I have just read the Commerce Commision's Telecommunication report for the March 2008 Quarter.

Vodaphone's Prepay plan is still rated at 28th out of 30 in the OECD for calling prices.

I thought they were trying to get up into the top quarter or at least the half way mark.

Paul the only way for this to happen is for you to make MEANINGFUL drops in the price of each minute that you gouge out of us every quarter.

Try that for a year and then we can see where we are. People would make more voice calls and text less if you dropped the price.

By the Way Telecom also rates about 28th !

Cartel anyone ?

678687 2008-06-16 05:40:00 Hi Digby. The Commerce Commission has left out the Vodafone base plans as it doesn't like them. These plans offer the kinds of value the OECD plans look for. Remember, the OECD won't include Best Mates or Family in its assessments, so our real value is being ignored at that level.

We are in the top half - the OECD recognises it but the ComCom is only considering whether or not to accept it.
Cheers

Paul

678688 2008-06-16 05:54:00 I'm with Digby on this one even though I am a Vodafone contract customer. Telecom and mobile phone service providers need to look beyond the txt and voice calling market for their source of revenue. There is MUCH more value to be had in 3G broadband access and the various software as a service options as described in this article in Wired mag a while back

by fostering more innovation, carriers' networks could get more valuable, not less. Consumers will spend more time on devices, and thus on networks, racking up bigger bills and generating more revenue for everyone.

Really? Well, I'll alert the marketing team . Who would have thought 3G broadband, something we launched several years ago, would be a source of revenue?

Yes, Mobile broadband is a source of revenue . But the OECD figures are about voice and TXT not about mobile data . That doesn't figure in it at all .

However, for those that do want mobile broadband, Vodafone has just launched new casual data rates:

Vodafone launches $1 a day mobile broadband

Vodafone has blown apart the mobile data market with the launch of its new casual rate of $1 a day .

From July 28, customers will be able to surf the net, download music and games and play on their favourite sites without committing to a fixed monthly data contract .

The $1 a day casual rate gives customers up to 10MB of data – more than enough for most casual users on their mobile devices . Customers who go over that limit will be charged at $1 per megabyte and users who regularly need more can take advantage of our suite of data plans .

Vodafone’s GM of Products and Services, Kursten Shalfoon, says the new casual rate will change the way customers use the internet on their mobile devices .

“Over the past year we’ve increased network capacity, the handsets are evolving rapidly and now we’re able to bring mobile internet alive with sharper prices .

To make sure customers can take advantage of the new rate, Vodafone’s network is optimising websites for viewing on customers’ mobiles – a first for New Zealand .

“There’s nothing to install at the customer’s end, and it works with all our WAP-enabled mobiles . It means customers don’t spend ages downloading a page they can’t read on their mobile device . Instead they’ll get a page that’s optimised for their own personal device making the experience that much better for all concerned .

The new pricing is simple and affordable, and now applies to almost all internet data, including the Vodafone Live! portal . Sky Mobile TV and Vodafone Compass will continue to be free of data usage costs .

“We have great content deals, and Vodafone Live will still bring the best of the internet to Vodafone customers, but it means the customers can decide what they’ll want to look at and what they want to get involved with .

Cheers

678691 2008-06-16 08:49:00 The trademe website uses like 1-2mb to load up so 10mb isn't really enough

Lol...About Vlive.Someone was charged $5 for a 2.1 sec ringtone.I don't recall that being great deals.

678693 2008-06-16 08:51:00 Paul,
aside from a 10MB data daily usage cap (which shouldn't be too hard to hit) what is your monthly data usage plan worth? and how much data does that involve?

Incidently when you can download a song for 3MB that only leaves you with 7MB of data for the rest of your day and that's only ONE song. Have you guys considered what happens when you start checking email, exchanging files via MS Exchange, checking your accounts and invoicing (Xero accounting software), searching on Google, watching a couple of clips on youtube, make a couple of dozen calls, send a few pics of that new job/product to a client etc etc - you might find that that remaining 7MB doesn't go very far... You might need to adjust your plans a bit.
