A loud explosion has been heard around Bishopdale Mall in northwest of Christchurch.

The mall was cordoned off by police after a man went into Westpac Bank in the mall demanding money at around 1.30pm. Police say he left a suspicious looking bag before leaving the bank.

The bomb disposal squad and a Customs bomb dog unit are at the scene, where there is also a heavy police presence.

Newstalk ZB host Ali Jones is outside the mall and says there has been a loud explosion, which may have been the bomb squad exploding the bag and its contents.

Police say there have been no arrests and it is not yet known if money was taken from the bank."

What is it about a bag that is suspicious may I ask?
Can you believe this sort of news reporting?

677801 2008-06-12 10:34:00 The bag had not shaved in a long time, had no ID, and refused to answer any questions. It was therefore deemed to be suspicious.

Three trees and a cat were also detained.

They didn't even say whether it was a male or a female bag!!

News reporting at it's finest.

677805 2008-06-12 13:03:00 My real point is that some people actually base their thinking on news reports which are short on facts and long in assumption. Sweep (90)
677806 2008-06-12 13:57:00 It appears to be changed from a bag to a package but it is still suspicious.

What is it with news reporting?

And why make news when at this stage I do not have any actual facts?
I also suspect the reporters do not have any facts either which is is also suspicious in itself.

Surely you recall the news reporters motto: Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story.:groan:

News reporting at it's finest .

Actually they aren't even sure whether the BADDIE was male, female, or transsexual, (if I remember correctly that this was the same incident) . The Press reports that the offender had "a very effeminate face" and there is some speculation about her/his gender . I think they are so puzzled about this that they haven't adequately concentrated upon the bag's gender .
