808597 2009-09-10 09:29:00 to detect a virus, should the System Restore be turned off beforehand. Rationale please? :thanks smurf (6545)
808598 2009-09-10 09:34:00 Yes as some viruses can hide in the restores I guess the registry so turning it off means it gets completely purged hopefully gary67 (56)
808599 2009-09-10 09:36:00 Simple answer=Yes

But, sometimes removing a virus can render a PC unbootable though....so it depends really...

808600 2009-09-10 10:50:00 Thanks guys....... Blam would this be the case with Personal Antivirus. That is if the System Restore was turned off would it create problems. After download Malwarebytes and renaming it, it opened fine and a scan without System Restore being turned off found 23 infections:) smurf (6545)
808601 2009-09-10 11:03:00 I would disable SR if thats on the system. Then scan then remove, then turn it back on when its clean Speedy Gonzales (78)

No, it doesn't depend. Malware will come back with a restore. If it won't boot, then it was damaged. A Repair Install should fix it. Sometimes if it is too stuffed for anything it's a reinstall but thats rare.

Either way there is no point in half measures. You clean it properly or you don't.

808604 2009-09-10 21:49:00 Thanks pctek.....Your last statement hits the nail on the head. One more question though, does Malwarebytes automatically quarantine the nasties or do you have to manually delete them. What is the correct way to get rid of the infection once it is detected :) Thanks :) smurf (6545)

Yes...for XP

But for Vista, its pretty impossible to do a repair install when the PC is unbootable..

808606 2009-09-11 01:33:00 I have repeated this question which was burried in a previous post but which has yet to be answered :)
