808527 2009-09-10 05:43:00 I'd appreciate some advice here. I thought that DVD players (this is on an Acer laptop) sold in NZ had to be region free.

The legislation is here: www.legislation.govt.nz

This suggests to me that it is legal to sell region free dvd players, but not obligatory. However I am sure last time I looked at this I found some case law (or something - I'm not a lawyer) which meant that players sold in NZ had to be region free, and I remember the Sony rep I contacted when we bought our DVD player a year or so ago confirming this.

808528 2009-09-10 05:44:00 My husband's new laptop insisted on being set to NZ/region 4 before it would play a DVD, and issued dire warnings about there being only 4 changes left before the player locked.

I'd like to know the full story before I contact the vendor. Thanks!

808529 2009-09-10 05:47:00 All normal drives have 5 region changes before getting locked to the last region it was set to. DVD43 gets you around a locked drive. That link appears to be broken. wratterus (105)
808530 2009-09-10 05:49:00 Thanks, Wraterrus. However, if it should have been sold region free, I'd prefer to get the vendor to sort it out.

Though it might come to that if Plan A fails.

808531 2009-09-10 05:51:00 I've never heard of a notebook drive being sold in NZ region free. wratterus (105)
808532 2009-09-10 06:18:00 Updated copyright act 2008: (www.legislation.govt.nz)

226 Definitions of TPM terms

In sections 226A to 226E, unless the context otherwise requires,—
“TPM or technological protection measure—
“(a) means any process, treatment, mechanism, device, or system that in the normal course of its operation prevents or inhibits the infringement of copyright in a TPM work; but

“(b) for the avoidance of doubt, does not include a process, treatment, mechanism, device, or system to the extent that, in the normal course of operation, it only controls any access to a work for non-infringing purposes (for example, it does not include a process, treatment, mechanism, device, or system to the extent that it controls geographic market segmentation by preventing the playback in New Zealand of a non-infringing copy of a work)

“TPM circumvention device means a device or means that—
“(a) is primarily designed, produced, or adapted for the purpose of enabling or facilitating the circumvention of a technological protection measure; and

“(b) has only limited commercially significant application except for its use in circumventing a technological protection measure

“TPM work means a copyright work that is protected by a technological protection measure.

808533 2009-09-10 06:38:00 Hmm, closer inspection of the legislation reveals that it is administered by Min Economic Development. Will contact them and report back in case anyone else ever wants the answer to this question. annie (6010)
808534 2009-09-10 06:43:00 you may be able to get firmware to make it region 0. utopian201 (6245)
808535 2009-09-10 06:49:00 It was region zero before the rental DVD forced the change. Maybe the rental DVD forced the change, in which case the DVD would be breaking the law (as I read it). I'll have a look at the firmware option, thanks. annie (6010)
808536 2009-09-10 09:10:00 It was probably region free, because no dvd had been played on it before. Thats why it changed it to region 4, when you put the DVD in. Not much you can do about it. Just dont play any other region besides 4, otherwise it'll lock it at the last one Speedy Gonzales (78)
