677056 2008-06-11 09:44:00 Here is a brief hands on break down of the 3G iPhone
A few sites were able to get brief "hands on" time with the new iPhone (Macworld, Engadget, Gizmodo). Initial impressions included:

- Enable/Disable 3G setting is real, Reception seems better
- Feels similar to existing iPhone, thicker in center, thinner on edges but same geometric volume as previous iPhone
- Volume buttons now silver metal, Clearer speaker audio
- Camera seems same, Geotagging also there

The iPhone 3G will be released in AT&T and Apple Retail stores on July 11th, 2008 at a discounted price of $199 for 8GB and $299 for 16GB. This represents $200 less than the price for the first generation iPhone. While we were hoping details about the launch would be clearer a day or two after the announcement, there still lingering questions about activation and the sales procedure.

677058 2008-06-11 09:53:00 I'm too bloody scared to even try and use the internet on my phone.

Ditto.

I took my cell with me for 6 weeks roaming the US, Europe and Thailand. I stuck religiously to txts except for a couple of times I had to use voice. Ended up paying about twice my normal monthly bill and those 2 voice calls made up about 1/4 of the bill.

Just as well my old piece of rubbish can't really do internet. They used to rort us on voice, now they can't wait to rort us on data. It's a shame, because products like the iPhone and its competitors are really coming into their stride.

Read all that earlier. ;) Apple had to instigate the instore registration to avoid hackers "unlocking" the iPhone which was losing them part of the 10% of user generated revenue - something they are hoping to eliminate by releasing the iPhone in 70 countries by the end of the year with multiple carriers in some countries and the $199 purchase price around the world.

My Mum died while I was in Oz in 2004. The phone bill for all the calls I had to make cost me three arms and two legs....

I must say it was a great help being able to do so though. Made Telecom's obscene charges worthwhile. But then, I think that locking myself in a Tardis with a pocket full of dollar coins would have been a whole lot cheaper. I could have done this and just used the cellphone's address book to get the numbers.

677062 2008-06-11 22:03:00 I am surprised that some of you have had high costs for txts when roaming overseas. I have used my phone for txts quite a bit on overseas trips, and whilst it was more expensive than usual, there wasn't a huge difference compared with my normal monthly charges.

I was always careful to use a preferred network - I use Vodafone here (or Vodafone uses me...), so I always set Vodafone as my preferred network in Britain and Oz. I was told that some other networks charge like a wounded bull (or Vodafone charges u like a wounded bull if you use a non-Vodafone network).

Occasionally the phone swapped to another network as I was travelling, and I sent txts without noticing the change of carrier, and it was true - txt charges for some networks were noticeably higher. Over 100 txts it would have been a considerable difference.

677063 2008-06-12 00:04:00 why is it that i cant find a NZ price?
not a guess, not a "i read it in the paper", not i think it will be about....

I mean a real proper price as stated by apple NZ or vodafone.

Vodafone signed the contract months ago, you cant tell me they havent decided on a price yet.

No, but they haven't announced a price yet. That's, you know, why you can't find one.
