677036 2008-06-11 06:14:00 I think Apple is brilliant. They keep the crowds guessing, and feel quite free to charge a premium for their laptops, computers and other products. There's a good reason people eagerly buy these though (as much as I don't like this strategy, clearly it works). The industrial designers and OS developers do an outstanding job with design continuity and that's something every other company lacks (with a few exceptions perhaps, not that I can think of any)!
One problem I have with Apple though, is the tightly closed source idealogy of the company. Strikes me as a company that's not afraid to dictate what it's customers want, should want and how they want it, no questions asked. As more and more Apple devices make it into the home and business we're essentially telling Apple to keep it up, keep us guessing and eventually dictate how we run our operating systems, mobiles etc. Just a thought!
Here's hoping the iPhone 2 will really stir things up in the mobile market, especially Android and the handset makers who choose the run the open source mobile OS.

That closed source ideaology does seem to be "opening" up somewhat with the iPhone SDK. However it hasn't exactly hurt their sales in the last 10 years with the development of OS X. Also 5,200 developers registered for the sold out WWDC with most of them (enterprise included) developing for the iPhone.

The whole thing behind mac is that they design and sell good products. While this sounds stupid, most businesses focus is financial, primarily. Mac seem to see that if they design good products, and market them well, then the financial and competitive side will take care of itself. That would hit the nail on the head. Apple has been one of the fastest growing tech companies in Silicon Valley for the past 10 years for just that reason. As for games - there are quite a lot lined up for the iPhone ;)

677038 2008-06-11 06:24:00 This is from some months back

Thursday's introduction of an iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) has game developers everywhere excited about the possibilities of iPhone game development, especially after seeing game demonstrations during the event. Developers agreed that Apple is pushing the iPhone as a major portable gaming platform.

"This is the coolest thing I've seen in game development in 15 years, except maybe for the Nintendo Wii," said Glenda Adams, director of development for long-time Mac game publisher Aspyr Media.

677040 2008-06-11 06:52:00 So hopefully handset prices will come down....now we just need call pricing, petrol, diesel, LPG, dairy products, rice and general grocery prices to come down and we just might make it through the winter! pine-o-cleen (2955)

They may come close in hardware design but I would say that they will be a distant 2nd in GUI and OS since they are running using Windows Mobile Platform I think :xmouth:. Unless they come out much cheaper than Apple I don't see them competing or pulling ahead any time soon since it is the whole package that makes the difference. They would also have to think at a much faster more innovative pace than Apple ...shakes head ...ain't going to happen.
