678494 2008-06-15 11:54:00 Have always used a weak solution of dish-washing liquid & water. Work's perfectly on all 5oz, 7oz, 12oz, & pint glasses. Can also be used on spectacles. :D BobM (1138)
678495 2008-06-15 12:00:00 Microfibre cloths are cheaper at the $2 shop, and larger. Wherever you get them, wash them every month or so, in hot water with dish liquid soap added, and rinse carefully to remove soap otherwise the cloth will leave streaks and smears.

Always use water. Cleaning with a dry cloth, shirt, towel, etc. can result in scratches due to dust and dirt.

Never use hand soap as a film will remain, probably from moisturisers and other additives. Dilute dish soap is best (liquid Palmolive, Sunlight, etc) - if you use full strength dish soap it takes longer to wash away.

...OT... SAVE $$

Eyeglasses (other than for reading only) are very expensive here in NZ. My progressives (which allow for close and distant vision) cost $950. My next pair will be from the USA, for around $150 NZD including shipping - and yes the quality is OK, google around to find the info. Or I just may get laser treatment and get rid of specs altogether, after over 40 years.

Reading glasses are cheap, ranging from $2 at you-know-where, to $30 - $40 from chemist shops. Unless you have an unusual condition, the $2 reading glasses are OK - don't believe the warnings opticians may give you as they have lost a lot of $$ from the cheap Asian specs competing against them. But as I said, get your eyes tested to ensure you do not have an unusual condition that may require specialised reading glasses.

Does everyone realise that you need to get your eyes examined every two years, for glaucoma and other nasty diseases?

Yes it seems that everything is dearer in New Zealand !

How could you order glasses from the States without knowing the specs of the specs ie the Specifications of the glasses . I hardly think your optometrist is going to give you the numbers !

Yes they do. When your eye examination is finished, they hand you a card with the measurements needed to get glasses, or at least they have always done so for me. Ask for it if they don't give it to you. If in doubt ask if you can get the measurements before you get the exam done.

The only other thing you need to do with glasses ordered online is probably to adjust the tabs that fit on your nose and also the arms that fit over your ears. I do this with long nose pliers cushioned with cloth so the pliers do not leave marks. Or take them to an optomitrist for adjustment - I never get charged when they readjust my specs if they are bent (and I don't feel like doing the plier thing myself).

Looks like its time to get a new Optometrist Digsby if they aren't giving you this info!

I get all the no.'s off them and just get them made in India and sent over. Costs about $200 a pair with all the coatings and any frame that I like. (Plastic lenses)

678500 2008-06-16 07:46:00 For a good clean just handsoap and water . . . then dry off with a towel and then with the free microfibre cloth .

Most times just the microfibre cloth .

There are lenses that don't smudge as much . I have bought the hardened lenses from OPSM and then from another local Optometrist they might be HOYA .

But having said that plastic lenses the normal ones are fine, unless you have v thick lenses and need thinner ones . I have used glasses playing basketball etc . . they have dropped on floor and they are fine, occasionally the lenses have flew out of the frames and they are still fine, a few dents but you can still use them and they scratch thou but most times you cannot see them unless you really look at them at an angle . The hardened lenses hide more scratches if that is what you want . They are then half as cheap thou .

Grandparents, not a commercial optometrist service I'm afraid. They're all doctors so they get them made pretty quickly and there are always people coming and going so delivery is speedy and free.
