676855 2008-06-10 08:16:00 I use OO all the time, and find it an excellent suite of programs (and, of course, you can't complain about the price!).

When sending documents to someone else, export them as a PDF (in the File menu) -- most of the time, you don't need recipients editing your files, and PDFs are fairly universal :)

676856 2008-06-10 08:21:00 No it isn't. Its best to click on Tolls - Options, then choose Load/Save - General.
Then change Txt to MS Word2000/XP format
And Calc to MS Excel200/XP.

That way it saves as MS format and oyu don't need to worry.

And if you do all this I take it that the spell checker gets broken?

My real point is that if a document is saved in rich text then practically any word processor will be able to open it.

If I sent any person on this planet an Email attachment without knowing what O/S and what applications they have then I would normally try to bring the format down to the lowest level that may be understood, opened, edited and also returned so that I can update the file if needed.

It is really a question of shared files, who you need to share them with and whether the other person needs to edit or not as the case may be.

Not that I have anything against open office. It has the advantage that it is free and will probably work for most people.

676857 2008-06-10 09:02:00 Sorry to differ but I don't think Open Office is the best thing since sliced bread. Sure it's value for money, but it is very slow to load, and is inclined to crash and freeze more than I am comfortable with. Most of the time I just pull up MS works 4.5, which does about 95% of what I want to do.I am still looking for an alternative office program to do the rest. tutaenui (1724)

I guess as with anything it's "Your Milage May Vary" ... I've had a lot less crashes with OO than I have had with anything Microsoft-related.

The whole point as I see it is how your document(s) can be shared with other people. Personally, I don't care what someone uses to actually create the document ... just give it to me in a format that I can read! This is why I use PDFs -- I can use any program I like, and use something like PDFCreator to pass out my finished product to whoever. PDFs are generally cross-platform, and can be easily viewed by anyone. Once people start doing that, it'll matter less and less which product you actually used.

676859 2008-06-10 10:34:00 What about Google Docs?

I find it very handy when it comes to sharing and working with docs simultaneously. Beats emailing each other and getting old copies.

That's certainly a good thing about it, though I doubt Google Spreadsheet can run Macros?

I also find it very slow to load but havent had issues with it crashing, perhaps because I dont use it that often. You get what u pay for and for the cost of it it does the job fairly well.

Couldn't agree more.
I have OFFICE as it came with the computer but I have never used it.
The old MSWorks (ie v4.5) is streets ahead of anything else on the market providing you are a normal person doing normal things. WORD is OK for the times when you want to shove some odd ball photo etc into a document and MSworks might find it difficult.
MSWorks also has the best database program of any. A simple flat file database.
I have about 70 databases all using MSworks - and of course all are flat file. Normally it takes me about a couple of minutes to design a new one. Try that with OFFICE and next year when its finished - let me know.
Databases do not replace spreadsheets but on the whole are a lot more useful and reliable.
ABILITY I used some years ago and found it excellent. It had some odd features, but then it did come on a couple of 5 inch floppies and I used DOS so it will be different now. Just glad to hear it is still running.
