677811 2008-06-13 00:04:00 I found the article in The Press. It says that "A male bank robber with a face 'striking in its femininity' triggered a bomb scare at a Christchurch bank yesterday." [...] "The man was described as olive skinned, possibly Maori, in his early 30s, and 'effeminate-looking, almost like a transvestite'. 'His face was striking in its femininity,' (Detective Sergeant) Cottam said".

For those of you who are curious about the provenance of the bag, the article says "He left on a bicycle but left behind a green eco-friendly shopping bag and a threatening note." So we are left wondering whether green eco-friendly shopping bags are inherently suspicious, or whether it was the note that made the difference.

677812 2008-06-13 00:46:00 why do they detonate suspicious bags? what would they do if it was filled with some deadly bio or chemical agent, or a bomb capable of taking out the whole street block?

i mean, if they're going to assume it's a bomb, blowing it up seems like a pretty dumb way to go about assessing it

even more stupid, is they use a $500000+ robot to blow it up and often damage it in the process (i reckon i could make one for well under $100000 and still be putting over half in my back pocket)

don't they have anyone capable of firing a rifle? maybe leave a charge next to the bag (get a dog to do it if they don't have any other oppurtunity) and set it off remotely?

677815 2008-06-13 04:41:00 Dammit - it was an eco-friendly bag. It would peacefully and responsibly bio-degrade with no need for explosions ;)
What is the carbon footprint of exploding shopping bags anyway?

The report of this incident wasn't written by Spike Milligan was it?

677817 2008-06-13 08:28:00 Well, now that the precedent for dealing with "whatever you are suspicious of" has been set, I am starting to look forward to visits from missionaries, and best of all, the inevitable flood of would-be politicians later this year.

I have always been suspicious of missionaries and politicians, soon we will have a chance to see just what they are made of.

Blowing it up is just so much cooler and bad-ass than doing anything else to it :D
