However, I'm sure there would be nothing to stop you from importing from a country where they are available on pre-pay (for example, a conveniently close country called Australia). ;) maccrazy (6741)

I have a feeling that Apple will be attempting to clamp down on the unofficial registering of the 3G iPhones this time around. I have seen a few comments around about instore activation only which will be global since it is a global release.

Sounds like the iPhone is going to bring in the $moolah for Apple too

Don't the Aussies ban Apple imports as a rabid virus risk? (Fireblight) ;)

Only ones exported from NZ. :p

Just as a price comparison I see Vodafone advertising the BlackBerry 8310 Curve for $699 + Free Compass and Free email and web access for 6 months on a 24 month plan with RRP of $999 in today's SST.

677139 2008-06-15 01:52:00 So if the Blackberry is at $699, the iPhone should be around $75? ;) (With 12 months of free calling thrown in as a sweetener.) R2x1 (4628)

That would depend on what Vodafone has in mind and how much they want to get it out there. Although that is pretty much what has happened in the UK and France, their situation is different in that they are allowing iPhone customers to upgrade to the 3G iPhone for 50 Euros where as there hasn't been a legit iPhone market here until now.
With 12 months free calling Vodafone would still win by picking up revenue on the data charges (as long as they are not excessive)

677141 2008-06-16 02:07:00 Aussies to receive 1.31m iPhones over next five years
A new report by IDC claims that 1.31 million 3G iPhones will be shipped to Australia by the end of 2012 in order to satisfy the increasing consumer demand for converged mobile devices.
