677115 2008-06-13 01:32:00 The new iPhone has a camera front and back for video calling - or at least that is what i read a while back but that will also be determined by 3G network availability. The video calling will use h.264 codec compression on the video I think

From what I have heard, there is no front camera, so it would be hopeless for video calling, if you can't see who you are speaking to.

Too true - I got corrected by plod last night on that. Although as they have a patent on the concept I would expect to see it appearing on a soon to be released version of the iPhone.

Apparently they could have but decided not too

iLounge reveals that Apple has included a second proximity sensor to the iPhone 3G to provide more accurate face-detection. This brings the total number of sensors to three (two proximity sensors, one ambient light sensor).

Apple previously included one proximity sensor near the earpiece of the original iPhone to prevent accidental key presses when the phone was held against your face. By adding a second proximity sensor, Apple is said to have improved this face-detection functionality. As a result of this addition, case manufacturers have increased the size of the opening surrounding the earpiece of the iPhone.

Details of the 3rd sensor had sparked speculation that Apple could have included a front-facing camera to enable video conferencing. No front-faced camera design, however, was announced at WWDC.

677118 2008-06-13 04:46:00 Functionality must not be allowed to interfere with the Appleness.

(With Apple's history of achievement in things photographic, leaving it out is a plus.) :o

677119 2008-06-13 05:00:00 Man, you Mac users really are simple...And I can maximize my programs too!
Hey, that's a low blow. Our green button (www.imagef1.net.nz) is just starting to act like a maximise button more regularly, so shoo.

Must be that SDK with the iPhone to make it worthy as a top level college grade gadget

Correct, they started that about 3-4 weeks ago. They now have Mark Webster of the now defunct NZ Mac Guide fame running a more accurate Mac blog on what looks like a daily basis for the Herald. He replaces Herald Gadget Guy, Peter Griffin who has gone to work for the new Govt run Tech task force.

That's $199 US and yes Steve said that that would be the global price limit which is $264 NZ so probably priced from $265 for the 8GB to $299 for the 16GB iPhone although if they were priced at $199 NZ that would be pretty cool:banana :punk
