677899 2008-06-12 22:00:00 My son just signed up with Snaps Naked DSL. His first ever internet!
Oh, er.
He'll be getting instruction in malware protection tonight.

Cheaper than Xnets.

Snap seem to have a good reputation too, a rival for Xnet it seems.

www.snap.net.nz

Anyone using it yet? Opinions?

677901 2008-06-12 23:59:00 Note that if you want phone services, it actually works out to about the same price as Xnet. Also Xnet's extra data is much cheaper at $1.04/GB Sherman (9181)
677902 2008-06-13 00:15:00 And am I reading that right? Phone service with SNAP costs $42 a month (outside the specified areas where there is fibre!) - isn't that the standard Telecom charge? So you get $42 for the phone, and say another $34.95 for the BB (SNAP Broadband B plan), less a $10 discount for the phone, which makes it $66.95 a month, for Full Down/Throttled Up and only 3GB??

Doesn't sound that good a deal to me.

Of course you could get the most appropriate BB plan and dump Telecom and get a Skype local number. Only problem there is that you pay for all calls to the Skype local number unless the caller is also using Skype... Still....

677903 2008-06-13 00:19:00 Snap have been around a long time, they merged with Inet some years back. There main activity is business/corporate connections around Canterbury. One of my work colleges has worked there in the past..

There residential is all the same resold Telecom DSL garbage.

It's not quite a direct comparison, as the Xnet fusion includes their VFX VOIP service with the price.

Mind you, if you aren't going to be USING the VoIP it is more expensive.

677906 2008-06-13 03:28:00 I've been with Snap in Chch before. Excellent service all round. They were never quite the cheapest but they made up for it with the service. I did have a problem once and it was sorted out very well - can't ask for more than that. Never had to wait for long periods on hold.

Not sure what they're like these days.

677907 2008-06-13 09:26:00 Well points for their helpdesk.
Telecom stuffed up and the tunnelling is wrong. Or not done, who knows.

Son, after consulting me, rang Snap and they straight away logged a fault after he told them the results of his modem diag screen. No messing about, a quick check all else was OK at his end and apologies from them.

He's still p***** off as he was looking forward to playing with it over the weekend......seeing as he hasn't ever had internet before.

Oh well, the novelty will soon wear off once girlfriend starts hogging it.........:D
