677650 2008-06-12 00:29:00 Just watched an advert for a mop that cleans everything.

It said 1500 Watts of steam.

I do not think steam is measured in watts or have things changed since I went to school.

What gives?

677651 2008-06-12 00:56:00 Just sounds like advertising-speak to me Sweep . . . . . When I was in Hardly Normal recently looking at vacuum cleaners, the sales chappy took great delight in telling me that their Miele cleaners had 2000w inputs, but because they were so efficient, 'put out' 500w of suction power . . . . . . . . quite how you measure suction power in watts is beyond me . . . :illogical nofam (9009)
677652 2008-06-12 01:04:00 What is the measure or suction power? I mean, we have "horsepower" for push/pull. Should we have an "octopus" scale for suction? Biggles (121)

Nah Bruce, the octopus scale was a well recognised measurement for kissing when I was a young fella. It was used in the following vernacular... "She has a 3 octopus kiss" On a scale where 1 was normal. 2 was intense, and 3 sucked your brains out. The originators of the scale could not be held responsible for happenings after a 3 octopus kiss :wub :wub :wub

PS True I tell you...

677654 2008-06-12 01:23:00 That sort of thing is normal. I saw an ad for a chainsaw a couple of days ago: "Guaranteed minimum trade-in of up to $1000". Makeup ads have "Unretouched" on them. Technically that allows them to 'touch' (read: photoshop) the images once. I think. stuff like that is all too common these days. Now, when I see a new ad, I read the small print ASAP. If I can. Yep, on some ads, the small print is just a white blur (and that's on a 62" screen). The ASA has it's work cut out for it. ubergeek85 (131)
677655 2008-06-12 01:54:00 Geekster.

Quite correct. You can not read the fine print on a TV ad unless you are very quick.

What I had earlier was an advertorial and the person said it has 1500 WATTS of STEAM.

Nothing was mentioned about suction unfortunately so I have no idea about how the item would clean a carpet as I did not see the product actually cleaning a carpet. I saw it getting stains off other types of flooring cover like tile, lino and etc.

Am I going to buy one? Not in my lifetime!!!!

677656 2008-06-12 02:01:00 It's the same with the powerade ads: "When you blah blah your blood starts to thicken, making it harder for your heart to pump energy to your muscles". Well, my muscles always ran off oxygenated blood, not pure energy. You would need pretty strong arteries to hold energy, with it being equal to mass times the speed of light squared and all. ubergeek85 (131)
677657 2008-06-12 02:05:00 The worst part is, my ma wants to get one of those steam mops.

Even though she has a 'steam duck' she never uses, even though she has a foot spa she never uses.

'Suction measure' equivalency is 'voter gullibility'....

Didn't Watt invent the steam engine???
