677529 2008-06-11 07:17:00 I'm confused. And maybe angry. But why does a lot of operations that are fueled by taxpayers' money cost, frankly, so ****ing much?

For example, that false claim some months ago that lasted two days, which involved a few police traveling here and there. That reportedly cost us over $20000.

Another example: some nosy neighbour thought a friend of mine drilled holes in large broken wall pieces on his front yard and hid drugs in there. So, the anti-druggy team got called in, complete with about 20 officers, a truck and a crane to lift the damn thing up. A police admitted that pointless operation cost us around $20000.

Just tonight in Aussie, I think (I heard it at the last minute). A few jurors were caught playing sudoku when they were supposed to be hearing the case. This whole charade was reported to cost taxpayers a whopping $1,000,000. You saw it right. 1, MILLION, DOLLARS.

My question is:

......why....?
.....why???

677530 2008-06-11 08:36:00 Why? Because of compliance costs and the fact is, public agencies use outside contractors with very little transparency and thought as to the awarding of the contract and final cost. And labour is so expensive for everything.

Take the example of the Auckland City Council who were caught a couple of weeks ago giving out huge contracts without any semblance of bidding to firms run by ex-council staff.

Remember: They are using OUR money, not THEIRS and they dont think that they'll be caught and if they do, well, no is really going to be held responsible. Its a carte blanche to do what they want.

Must do a study of that would cost.

I'm sure you could get government funding for that, Sweep! :groan:
