809028 2009-09-11 11:22:00 Hi, laptop is dead, salvage the HDD due to it being XP Home there are some restrictions .

I have this webpage for reference:
. microsoft . com/?kbid=308421" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com

Now, I wanna make sure that the drive still works before I go out and buy an enclosure or he does . Is it possible to take it out and stick it into my laptop and see if it boots?

Then how is it possible to extract the files off that?
I ask because the laptop will only have a place for one HDD . I won't be having my own windows installed, the only HDD installed will be his HDD waiting to be salvaged or would I need to put that HDD in a enclosure and run it external and use my own HDD running windows?

By the way does it work if I have Windows 2000 trying o get the data off a foreign XP Home HDD?

Thanks .

809030 2009-09-11 11:39:00 You would be better off to slave the laptop HDD to a working PC, or putting the drive in an enclosure, attach by USB and extracting data to another PC.

OR attaching the laptop HDD to a working PC as the main Drive, boot from a Linux Live CD / Extract data to another PC over a LAN, or to a external drive.

Attaching the Drive to a working Laptop would work IF the hard ware is identical , or close enough - BUT you can sometimes run the (slim) risk of damaging the working laptop - ending up with two duds.

2000 may work OK extracting data - as long as the file system on the 2000 is formatted to NTFS.

NTFS will see NTFS & FAT32. FAT32 wont read NTFS.

I put in an enclosure for him and it just worked. Glad that all the files can be retrieved.
