808443 2009-09-09 18:38:00 The CD reader on my Toshiba lappy is playing up.
The fault is intermittent and consists of;
Not seeing disks at times.
Working ok for periods (sometimes long enough for an os install)
My question is:Is it likely to be a major or could there be a quick fix that
I can try.
I can manage no problem without the drive but it is a bit more convenient
to have it.

808444 2009-09-09 21:31:00 Try updating the firmware on it. Blam (54)
808445 2009-09-09 22:03:00 Thanks 4 that.I should explain further that this occured while XP was installed and I was trying to install Ubuntu.It would go for about 80% of the install then stall.
I managed to trick it by installing Crunchbang linux which is a much smaller install
and all is 100% so I have a very nifty new linux to play with and everything works
with the CD-DVD.I guess it was the xp firmware that was the problem.
Windows is now gone from another of my machines.

808446 2009-09-09 22:12:00 Did you try to install Ubuntu using WUBI and it stopped on 80%, or were you doing a proper install?

If it froze on a proper install then it can't be XP's firmware problem.

808447 2009-09-09 23:23:00 I was doing a proper install but also in XP I could not write to the cd.
Now with XP "GONE" and just CrunchBang on everything is working
100%.
