680179 2008-06-19 04:26:00 Exxon Mobil, Shell, Total and BP — the original partners in the Iraq Petroleum Company — along with Chevron and a number of smaller oil companies, are in talks with Iraq’s Oil Ministry for no-bid contracts to service Iraq’s largest fields, according to ministry officials, oil company officials and an American diplomat. (www.nytimes.com)

"There was suspicion among many in the Arab world and among parts of the American public that the United States had gone to war in Iraq precisely to secure the oil wealth these contracts seek to extract. The Bush administration has said that the war was necessary to combat terrorism. It is not clear what role the United States played in awarding the contracts; there are still American advisers to Iraq’s Oil Ministry.

Sensitive to the appearance that they were profiting from the war and already under pressure because of record high oil prices, senior officials of two of the companies, speaking only on the condition that they not be identified, said they were helping Iraq rebuild its decrepit oil industry. "

Tie this in with the latest Bush-speak about drilling for oil in the continental shelves around the US and slopes in Alaska...and the tantrums that the tree-huggers will raise..and see if there's a common thread that YOU notice here.

Don't shoot the messenger again.

680180 2008-06-19 04:36:00 Interesting, all this talk about terrorism being the reason for the US going to war. I can remember Bush talking to the woman who had had a son killed in Iraq. She was camped out by the entrance to his ranch and refused to move until he would stop and speak to her. Finally he succumbed to media pressure and stopped.

She asked him why USA went to war and why her son died.

He replied something along these lines... "Y'all wanted cheap petrol, didn't y'all"

I bet his minders put him back in his cage after that.

ROFL

Some of the dumbest people on Earth (outside the US) now realises the US is in Iraq 95% for oil .

Another BS lop sided smudgy long winded mainstream article to obscure whats actually going on, does anyone outside the US believe this type of controlled propaganda drivel anymore?

To respond to this would take far to long, I think a superficial flame is warranted .

680182 2008-06-19 07:00:00 Remember that we are talking "small" companies here...not really the likes of Exxon and such..just their "foot-in-the-door" subsidiaries. SurferJoe46 (51)
680183 2008-06-19 07:12:00 does it matter who is stealing the oil? Battleneter2 (9361)

680185 2008-06-20 19:38:00 I don't believe the US went to war for the oil.

We (the west) were already getting oil from Saddam.

The war was won six weeks after the invasion (or less)

The US set up the various Iraqi governments ever since.

So why did they not Immediately go for the oil then ?

There was a doco on Sky the other week about this.
The US government has been messing about with the Arab nations for a long, long time, anxious about oil.

Condaleeza Rice was on Chevrons board until her new role in government.

Why doesn't the US take an interest in other dictators round the world? Ones without oil? Ever wondered?

It comes down to ensuring supply.

Which, judging by the price, they are not doing a very good job of, are American politicians just incapable of understanding the subtleties of International politics or are they just too arrogant/stupid to care.
