679705 2008-06-18 02:45:00 Re this years coming power crisis

And every one we have had for the last umpteen years.

I am not going to cut back cos of them.

I reckon we should all use the power we need and can afford.

And if there up some power cuts then who do we blame - the idiots in Government that own the power companies and those Greenies that say we can't burn coal (but we ship it to China).

Apparrantly even with all the new wind turbines we have and the ONE gas fired emergency unit in Napier, we now have less generation capacity than we did 5 years ago ! Go figure.

The population is growing - we need more good kiwis !
We have more toys to use....

Then Helen Clark and her lame duck mates will feel the heat !

679706 2008-06-18 02:53:00 How we sell coal to China so they canb burn it for energy is pretty damn bad, But did you also know more then 70 percent of our recycled plastic is sent to china....who burn it for energy.

Blows the mind.

Anyway, I agree, and won't be cutting back on power, But having said that, we try not to waste it anyway, It all costs money.

679707 2008-06-18 03:05:00 As we seem to be in this sort of crisis every year (to a greater or lesser extent) - there is a school of thought that says that instead mucking in to save the overpaid electricity minions backsides, all consumers should use as much electricity as possible and bring the whole system to it's knees. Only that way would a message be sent that might ensure we eventually get an affordable reliable supply.

Oh well, dream on.

679708 2008-06-18 03:10:00 I will do what I can to save me money but when your in town/city and you see the shops with their lights on and they are closed for the night,or they have them on during the day as well you start to think why should I bother when they don't turn off their lights. They always seem to hammer and lay responsibility at homes and not shops-well you don't see adverts aimed at the shops do you? memphis (2869)
679709 2008-06-18 23:16:00 Wind Turbines and Solar are hideously inefficient compared to Hydro power, sure they make the greenies feel all warm and fuzzy.

No one wants more hydro lakes, no one even want wind turbines obscuring there view, no one wants nuclear, solar is hopeless, NZ does not want to burn fossil fuel for power.

NZ's hydro potential is no where near fully utilised, more hydro plants mean better redundancy even if most the lakes are low like this year. Its a lot better than burning fossil fuel, we need a government with some nuts to stand up and approve/fund some more projects.

679710 2008-06-18 23:31:00 Wind turbines, while not necessarily as efficient, are much cheaper and quicker to build than hydro. They also have less of an environmental impact, other than "visual pollution" than hydro and other forms of power generaiton.

If people stop moaning every time someone wants to build a power station, then we wouldn't be in this crisis. Take a look at these stats:

Projects Abandoned/Delayed/Restricted due to Resource Management Act :
· Project Aqua, hydro (520 MW) - abandoned 2000-2004
· Marsden B, coal (320 MW) - abandoned 2007
· Wairau Valley, Marlborough, hydro (75 MW) - abandoned 2007
· Whanganui/Tongariro, hydro – Environment Court effectively reduced the Tongariro capacity by one-third due to the “mauri” of the Whanganui river …
· North Bank Tunnel, hydro (260MW) - delayed until at least 2016
· Makara, wind - reduced from 210 to 140MW in 2007
· Project Hayes, wind (150MW) - still in delay
· Te Uku Wind (72MW) - awaiting consents
· Te Waka Wind (111MW) - consent overturned by Environment Court in April, 2007

679711 2008-06-18 23:52:00 Although wind can't be used for base load, and that's what we're starting to run out of. I say bring on nuclear . Erayd (23)
679712 2008-06-18 23:57:00 Or, as pctek suggested in a posting last week (?) - use more geothermal. I don't think the Earth's core is going to cool down anytime soon, and the bores only have to be a few km deep anyway... And you can reuse the water you pump down into them - free energy (nearly), aside from the set up costs... johcar (6283)
679713 2008-06-19 00:39:00 I think NZers need to get a bit more real. Yes, we love our clean green country etc, but it's a lot harder to love in the depth of winter when the power runs out.

Of course, if you did a referendum on the provision of power, I suspect you'd find that the bulk of the population is a little more realistic than the politicians ...

679714 2008-06-19 01:03:00 I like how the power saving ad's say "Your power companies are doing all they can..."

Yeah Right!!!

They keep charging us more and more while neglecting basic maintenance of lines and the building of additional power capacity.
